ucch- let’s blow s$^t up for no apparent reason instead of providing shelter for the homeless.

I didn’t know Macy’s or the NFL provided shelter for the homeless.

Actually, the NFL has a foundation that supports food programs, Taste of the NFL. Every year it holds fundraising events for programs in the host city. And it also sponsors a league competition to raise funds in all NFL cities– the Kick Hunger Challenge. Because one of the orgs it’s supporting this year is the Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger, that’s the New York “team”– all donations made through the challenge go to BSCAH, and if it wins, it gets an additional 10k from the NFL. if you want to add your support (to make sure Seattle, which is in 2nd place, doesn’t swoop in to win), by noon on Friday, go here: http://support.tasteofthenfl.com/site/TR/Events/General?team_id=1190&pg=team&fr_id=1070

You could say “why do [insert activity here] rather than provide shelter for the homeless” about anything. Did you go on a vacation ever? Have you gone to a nice restaurant? Do you have a [nice thing that costs money]? Why? The fact is we are not a commune, we’re a capitalist society. Some of us live in luxury, some in a cardboard box. Companies sponsor big events to promote themselves; they are not in the business of public service. Rather than ask why a store isn’t providing shelter, ask why we as a rich society don’t take adequate care of the less fortunate among us. This is the job of government, not commercial interests.

True, but unfortunately, the majority people today are following along with “the smaller the government, the better” mantra.

This comment has nothing to do with the fireworks, per se, but rather with the blog itself. Can someone tell me why, without failure, information on the blog is always a day late? The date of the fireworks notification was Monday, January 27th at 12 PM. However, it was not actually e-mailed until Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 4:01 AM, doing little good. This always happens with the blog, and I don’t see why the folks at the blog cannot make sure that informative e-mails about upcoming events cannot be e-mailed before the events actually occur.
