BPL Solicits Comments on Proposals to Replace Brooklyn Heights Branch

We previously reported that the Brooklyn Public Library has selected seven proposals for consideration to replace the existing Brooklyn Heights Branch. BPL is now soliciting comments from the public regarding each of the seven proposals. To comment, go here and follow the links to comment on each proposal. If your comment is, “Keep the existing library,” you could make that your response to each of the proposals.

    Keep the existing library is a false choice. It should be
    refurbish and improve the existing library and you need to solicit proposals as how to do it.

    Several of our electeds have agreed to work with us to obtain funding to refurbish and redo our existing library.
    We will get support from DeBlasio, James , Stringer, Millman and Levin for this.. so tell the library we want time to come up with a plan and yes we will involve Velasquez as well

    I agree that the phrase, “keep the existing library” is a devious way of looking at the situation. Instead, the community would be well served if the library is seen as a public asset that should be well-maintained, air-conditioned and not neglected and definitely not sold to developers whose aim is to alter the class base of the current neighborhood. All of the plans are poorly disguised schemes to make money for developers while destroying what remains of a diverse part of Brooklyn.

    Our political leaders should find the money in order to keep the existing Brooklyn Heights Library building sufficient to rehab and upgrade it to 21st Century standards including the air conditioning as well as the other building systems rather than selling it to real estate developers to make money in a half baked scheme that is not in the public interest.

    All the proposals seem very Tall to me. I wonder if more wind tunnel effects, like we have at the corner of Montague and Court, on parts of Pineapple Street, or Montague in front of the Bossert, will be created?

    Can the library and open a new, XXL Shake Shack. Does much more business than BPL and staff is so much friendlier!

    I didn’t mean to be devious. By “keep” I meant with necessary repairs to HVAC, etc. and with continuing upkeep.

    Claude, I have no quarrel with the way you phrased your question. I merely used “keep the existing library” to move into another way of understanding the problem. Happy New Year.

    I have changed from opposing to qualified supporting the sale. The reasons have to do with those proposed plans which meet my architectural criteria: 1. The new, tall building should be shouldered up against the Morgan-Stanley blank brick wall and extend only a limited distance onto the low, existing foot print ; 2. The library shall be a visible and welcoming feature of the building’s base on the street; 3. The new building should cast only the minimum possible shadow on the park during the critical afternoon sun period.
    Having met these criteria, then, the actual build out of the library and financial value the library gets from the deal, would, of course, need to be seriously considered.
