If you’re here for the post-Thanksgiving weekend, you should know there are some things going on locally. The gift shop at the Brooklyn Historical Society will have a sale this Saturday, November 30, from noon until 7:00 p.m. to celebrate Small Business Saturday and the Shop Local campaign. All purchasers will receive a 20% discount on all merchandise, except BHS members, who will get 25% off. Your correspondent got his Brooklyn Dodgers cap there. NOTE: The BHS Museum is closed Thanksgiving day and the Friday after, November 28 and 29. Looking ahead to Tuesday, December 4, at 6:30 p.m. eminent historian Eric Foner and BHS Public Historian Julie Golia will take a “nuanced look” at the Emancipation Proclamation (a rare copy of the Proclamation, signed by Abraham Lincoln, is one of the most significant documents in the Society’s collection) and its effects on our history. The event is free, but you must get a ticket here.
The Brooklyn Heights Cinema will be showing 12 Years a Slave, director Steve McQueen’s drama about a free African American New Yorker kidnapped and sold into slavery, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender, and with a cast including Heights resident Paul Giamatti. The Cinema is also showing Robert Redford’s All Is Lost, in which he portrays a solo ocean sailor’s fight for survival after his boat is almost destroyed by a drifting freight container. Showtimes are here.
Bargemusic has two concerts this weekend. On Saturday evening at 7:00 there will be a concert in the “There and Then” series, featuring Western Wind performing “Blessings and Miracles: Music for Thanksgiving and Chanukkah.” On Sunday afternoon at 4:00 there will be a “Masterworks” concert with works by Haydn, Ravel, and Tchaikovsky performed by Benjamin Bowman on violin, Joel Noyes on cello, and Steven Beck on piano. There will be no “Music in Motion” concert this weekend. More information and buy tickets here.
