Herbert Kaufman, an architect who, along with fellow Heights Hero Edwards Rullman and others, helped preserve and revive Brooklyn Heights, has died at 92, The Brooklyn Eagle reports. He restored many brownstones in Brooklyn Heights, including the old YMCA on Joralemon Street.
Kaufman was a BHA board member and vice president and worked on the landmarking of our neighborhood.
Rullman and Kaufman were mentioned in a 1984 New York Times article on brownstone renovation. The pair were members of the BHA’s Design Advisory Council, which offered free consultation to those renovating brownstone exteriors. A 1962 NYT article reports that in addition to Rullman and Kaufman, the group consisted of George P. Howard, Clay Lancaster, Ralph F. Cameron, William Hall, Joseph Merz , William R. Fisher and Otis Pearsall.
