MLK & Inauguration Day—And A Christmas Tree?

The annual Christmas tree that has festively lighted the Brooklyn Heights Promenade’s Montague Street entrance for 63 years is still standing… on January 21. According to tradition, January 6—the day of Epiphany or Twelfth Night, is the last day for ol’ tannenbaums.  (Photos: CT)

I recommended years ago that the Garden Club plant a real tree at that spot. That way, it could be decorated each year but you wouldn’t have to wait for the Parks Department to take it down – just take the lights and decorations off.

That’s a great idea, probably why it has not been done.

@ lori and arch stanton – I do not think a real tree would grow in that spot it is land fill an infastucture built garden not deep enough for a tall tree.

Why do you think its not deep enough?

    A horrendous mess, I’d say.

  • Gerry

@ Arch Stanton – yes not deep enough and drainage is a problem all over the Promenade, Lake Promenade at the Remsen Street end – a Chrstmas tree would not grow well.

  • Jim

love the tree !!! quite festive in the midst of winter !!!

Back up your assertion. You say it isn’t deep enough What makes you think that? The area was once open space, then backfilled when the BQE/Promenade were built. The fill was most likely the burden

  • Gerry

@ Arch Stanton – that is land-fill and a tree will not grow here but if you feel a tree will grow then go plant a tree.
