Reader Report: Tree Down on Remsen, 3 Cars Damaged

This dispatch from a BHB reader:

A large tree just came down at approximately 9:50pm this evening on Remsen Street. It was growing right alongside the building at 33 Remsen and fell across the road on top of at least three cars, with one parked in front of 34 Remsen taking the brunt. A firefighter is already on the scene with a chainsaw at 10:05pm. The tree still had most of it’s leaves and, weighed down by the wet snow, it came down in a gust of wind. The root ball doesn’t appear to have damaged 33 Remsen, which is amazing given how close to the building it was growing.

If you have a tree in front of your house you should be outside right now with a broom stick or something knocking the snow off it. At least the branches you can reach. Otherwise, this may continue to happen.

Fireman here on Hicks said big branches are coming down left and right…

Yep, branches are coming down all over; be carful if you venture outside.

Huge tree came down on Montague tonight as well. Props to the buildings residents for shouting at people to not walk under it before it cracked!

Multiple trees down on Hicks St @ Orange and Cranberry Sts. Ladder 118 already on site twice tonight.

    Just read this on twitter:

NYC Tree issues: 20,040 tree requests to date. Of these, 13,242 were trees down and 6,954 emergency tree conditions have been addressed

It’s a bad night for our trees.

There’s a tree in front of 191 Henry Street that’s leaning hard, held up only by a slab of concrete holding the roots down. The slab is raised about a foot from the rest of the sidewalk. Noticed this Friday.

Andy, wasn’t that 119 Henry, just south of Clark St.?

Flash mob, anyone? We could jump on the slab to prop the tree up again.

    (I kid.)

I do believe you’re right, DoM. And you’re my witness.

I called it in to the BHA, btw.
