This lone teddy bear sits at the foot of the flag dedicated to Joseph Agnello, 35, a firefighter with Ladder Company 118 in Brooklyn, who died at one of the Twin Towers. Joseph “was not a man who was defined by his job,” wrote someone who must have known him well. “He was a guy who loved his kids, his dogs, his life.”

    Does anyone have further info on how trailers are working at PS 8?

    They are ugly as sin but I hope the ends justify the means.

    Friends, I have an ailing cat (he began…).

    Can anyone recommend a good local vet? Someone who is

    skilled
    caring
    and not expensive?

    I live near Middagh, so anything reasonably proximate would work best.

    (I’m aware of the practice at 53 Hicks, which I pass daily, but, frankly, the set-up doesn’t encourage confidence.)

    imho, hope vet on Atlantic is the best in the area….

    I bit of a hike from middagh, but worth it. Only problem is that they run far behind schedule, so unless you get the first or second appointment, be prepared to wait.

    But they do a great job, and (although you would think this goes along with the job) they really love animals

    I second the Hope Vet recommendation, and Dr. Maddux in Cobble Hill, on Court St., is also excellent.

    A few months back I raised my concerns to Community Board # 2 about the need for a functioning website to keep the public informed of what they are doing. After getting the chairman so angry with me that he stormed away in protest, cooler heads prevailed and I was informed that a website would be created some time in July.

    I think everyone knows where this story is headed. As of this morning, Community Board 2 still has the same useless website. Tonight is the first meeting after the summer recess. The meeting is at six o’clock and will be held at 138 S. Oxford St, which is near the Williamsburg Savings Bank building. Although some people think it is pointless, I’m going to continue the struggle!

    Thanks TK, I’m behind you. The idea that the community can’t even figure out who is on the community board, or when they meet, is pretty ridiculous.

    Keep at it T.K.! A prayer for Joey “Bells” Agnello and his fallen comrades Robert Regan, Scott Davidson, Vernon Cherry, Pete Vega, Leon Smith, Robert Wallace, and Martin Egan. They were cherished neighbors to Middagh Street residents and heroes to us all.

    EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA!

    A chat with the Gristedes manager a scant twenty minutes ago has revealed:

    that the delay in renovation had to do with receiving insurance and the necessary work permit, both of which issues have been resolved

    did NOT have to do (he says) with the recent wage -issue court decision

    that workers have already been at work in the interior at the back of the store

    that “30 to 40 guys” would be on the job next week to continue the renovation

    that there will be “a beautiful cafe where the rotisserie [!] used to be

    that the store should reopen before Christmas.”

    Well, I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to sip my latte on the site of the former rotisserie, mother of the conflagration, while staring (pensively) at the Bounty Basic (“Cleans Up! Holds Up!”)….
