Brooklyn Heights Cinema Under New Ownership

Brownstoner reports that the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, 70 Henry Street (corner of Orange), the previous owner of which has serious legal problems, has been sold to Kenn Lowy, who “said the theater would continue to show independent films and add new programming like a silent movie night with live music once a month.”

    This is the exciting news for those of us who revere movies. The Brooklyn Heights Cinema shows the kind of indie film that is intriguing, sometimes challenging, and always fun and interesting. We welcome the new owner and want him to know there are some auterist fans here who look forward to themovies and managers continuing to be here!

    Thank goodness. It’s a great place, but you can tell the former owner was a jerk, just by the fact that he didn’t maintain the place at all. Ever go in there in the winter? I was too miserably cold to concentrate on the movie. They claim they blast the heat, but it’s clearly more an issue of poor insulation. Hopefully the new owner will spend a few bones to fix it.

    I second GM. So nice to have a theater in the neighborhood that shows independent films — even if it is a bit down at the heels.

    Count me in the cautiously optimistic category. Independent film presentation requires someone with a smart curatorial sensibility. It can be easy to mess up and go either too mainstream/Hollywood or too obscure and narrow. Hopefully they can straddle that line, and it sounds like they have some smart ideas.

    And yes, it would be good to see some upgrades too. I was there a week ago for Certified Copy and the projector completely broke down and we were all refunded our money.

    I hope it works out. Now, if all the critics of the theater
    would show up and support it, I’m sure the place would
    be better maintained. I have never seen the place more
    than 20% filled, if that, and it would be a tragedy if it closed.

    Love the idea of silent movies with live music. In fact some of the recent movies I’ve seen with dialog would have been better silent!
