Friday, June 19, 2009. I’ve decided, for the time being, to feature comparative photos of Pier 6 in this weekly post, since I’ve now found a good vantage point–the roof of the LICH parking garage–from which to shoot it. Comparative photos of the north and south ends of Pier 1 follow the jump.

    does anyone know why the vertical steel structures on the piers (formerly the warehouse supports) still remain up? Will the area on the piers themselves be part of the first phase of the park to open?

    Anon: The framework on Pier 2 (near the north end of the Promenade) remains up because it will be used for a new structure on the pier. This pier is to be used for year-round indoor recreation, including basketball, handball and bocce courts, an in-line skating rink, etc. I’m not sure why the framework for the north and south walls on Pier 6 remains; perhaps new walls will be put up as wind barriers.

    they don’t really seem to have their hearts in this do they?
    how much corruption exactly is part of this project? Is it greater than 50%? I have never witnessed a project with so much funding progress so slowly. I fear this may be a scandal.
    Millions and millions and millions of tax payers’ dollars and there is nothing to show for it but demolished piers with some soggy dirt being pushed here and there. how long does it take to push the dirt in place? what’s really going on down there?
    We should all be a little worried about this.

    I’m sure the capable, competent minds of the NY State Senate will get right onto an investigation.

    Right now, I think the minds of the NY State Senate are too busy pushing their own dirt around to focus on this particular issue.

    For the record, there is NO PLAN to do anything with Pier 2. On paper, yes. But they are spending all the money they have gotten on utilities for the housing inside the park ($60 million) and the fine greenery. There is no pier 2 recreation that is funded. Scandal you ask? Sure there is, but the people on the Development Corporation board, your neighbors on Columbia Heights, are just tickled that they have gotten exactly the “park” they want…nothing to do there, no way to get to it, lots of luxury condos parked at the entrances to guard it.
