Has anyone else noticed that Variety Mart on Montague have upped their shop window game quite dramatically in the past few weeks? I don’t recall this window display ever having changed so significantly in the 25+ years I have lived in the Heights! Good on them…

They had the window papered over for a month or so. I can’t imagine this is why…

I’ve lived in the Heights since … well, forever, and this change is almost disorienting. The random whatevers in the window have been a constant over the decades+, and maybe because I run in there for a new Pyrex cup or caulk or some specific thing, I sort of overlooked the “window chaos.” Quite the transformation.

Two complaints to 311, two department of sanitation violations for 144 Clinton Street, AKA the abandoned building at the corner of Aitken Place. Yet still no cleanup of the trash-strewn sidewalk. The violation notices are stuck inside the door while rats scurry past, heading to their nightly buffet. It shows you the limits of NYC’s property laws, I guess.

Anyone know what’s happening at the storefront at 57 Clark (formerly Clark pet.com)? Windows have been covered and work was being done. Hopefully something new coming in, that spot and the one next door have been vacant for a long time.

Whenever I need something I walk past this place, go to Bruno’s. Wonder if the people running Variety Mart finally realized enticing people to come in and browse is half the battle in retail sales.

    Anyone notice any changes inside?

Montague Street buildings in 1875. These burned down in November, 1903:

Someone wants to build a new house in one of those Grace Court gardens that’s shown in this week’s Open Thread photo above.

So says this link from Community Board 2: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Qyk4K_aE8VVyqnmYFGbbwMnRjCRK_X2K/view

Do you know what corner that is? What a shame. The U.S. looked a lot more like Europe in those days.

I had lunch at Taboonette today. It was spectacular! My heart still belongs to Heights Falafel but I’m definitely putting Taboonette in the rotation.

Heads up: The mailbox at the corner of Henry Street and Remsen Street in Brooklyn NY 11201 has been tampered with. A very sticky substance has been applied to the inside of the mail slot, presumably to prevent mail from dropping into the mailbox so that it can be retrieved later.

That’s the original home of BAM and the BPL, yes?

  • Jorale-man

I’m guessing that’s Clinton & Montague we’re seeing in the first photo. Columbus Park appears to be in the background.

Columbus Park only there after the 1940s.

I believe that is a picture of BAM before it burned down and the beautiful library was across the street on Montague.
