Does anyone know where the rotating fan/ringer sound is coming from near Pineapple and Henry?
    It’s nonstop and is annoying.

I used to get Mast Brothers chocolate.

Do you have a child who loves the view from the promenade? Do they ask you about the ships? Harbor by Donald Crews turns that same view from the promenade into a fun and educational children’s book!

The lard bread from Mazzola in Carroll Gardens is amazing. Think it’s right around $5.

    SO excited about this

Damascus Bakery on Atlantic has some nice treats. The baklava and hummus come to mind.

    Try the Women’s Exchange

It sounds like an alarm, which began around the time the Gristedes scaffolding went up (before the subway work began). Any ideas?

    Are they open yet?

  • Mary Kim

Yes, I saw they were open and serving yesterday.

Lots of discussion going on about it. See comments posted on nextdoor

I’ve heard something like that on and off for several years now. Sounds like a cellphone is too near a window. Yes, really annoying.

I’d like to give a shout-out to whoever it is that lives on the top floor of the 41 Clark St building that’s part of the Saint George Tower. You’ve had a bright purple light radiating out of one of your windows facing the street that was so annoying at night when trying to fall asleep. It was on non-stop for nearly 3 weeks in October. This week you’ve since changed the bulb color to a dimmer plain white that feels almost human at 1am. Now I don’t have to pull my blinds down in order to get some shut-eye. Thanks! Was this person a BHB reader?!

There’s someone in 111 Hicks on the Pineapple Street side in one of the apts with the windows cut into the building’s base with really bright lights and no window shades. The lights are on 24 hours a day, and they’re Really Annoying.

Wish I knew who it is…

Courtesy the Municipal Archives, here’s 42-44 Hicks Street in 1940. I don’t think the wooden houses at far right are still there, but I could be wrong:

Walked by yesterday and realized those wooden houses are still there, but they’ve been cleaned up. I think Carol Greitzer once lived in the house only accessible from a gated courtyard behind one of them.

Salter House is trying to become the Heights version of Crabtree & Evelyn, with an in-house brand of clothing. Article here in Women’s Wear Daily:

Walking up Garden Place a couple nights ago I saw a bearded, older gentleman emerge from a brownstone and proceed to urinate in the street. Right out in the open. Not sure if he was mentally ill or facing plumbing problems combined with a sudden urge and obviously I wasn’t about to stick around to inquire. But that was a new one.

“Gentleman?” Unzipped the trousers on his tuxedo, did he?

    Not a term I would have used…

  • Karl Junkersfeld

I remember Carol Bellamy living in that same house around 1980.
Andrew, I truly loved that picture of 44-42 Hicks back in the 40’s. Tremendous picture. I forwarded it to a friend and she told me someone else just mailed same photo to her earlier in the day. Your pictures are very popular.

Greitzer, now 97, is still around somewhere.

Well, not “my photo”—from the Municipal Archives. I just fiddle with the contrast, sharpness, crop out the usual vast amount of pavement in the foreground…
