In 1909 Chicago’s lakefront beaches were strictly segregated. On a hot July day a young Black man, Eugene Williams, was swimming and accidentally drifted into water off a “Whites Only” beach. A White man on the shore threw stones at him, and he drowned. Several Black bystanders who witnessed this asked a policeman to arrest the stone thrower, but no arrest was made. This Sunday, June 13, starting at 8:00 p.m., the Grace Chorale of Brooklyn will join with the Apollo Chorus of Chicago and a string quartet, to present “Epitaph for Eugene Williams”; music composed by Flannery Cunningham and Tanyaradzwa Tawengwa. Registration for this on line event is required but free, but donations are appreciated. You may register and, if you wish, donate, here.
