No GreenMarket Tomorrow; May Resume Thursday

Alert reader Ann of Orange advises us there will be no Borough Hall GreenMarket tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24 (and none at Union Square in Manhattan on Wednesday, March 25) “while officials work out further containment steps,” but that they are “[e]xpected to reopen after that.” We’ll keep you posted. Update: reader KBells40 says the GrowNYC Blog indicates the Borough Hall market will be open Thursday. It also indicates that the Union Square market, which is closed today, will be open Wednesday.

I saw an argument at the farmers market on Saturday, when one patron asked another to move further away. “We’re even doing this outdoors?,” the latter asked. Yeah, dude, even outdoors.

Talking about the markets, as long as China continues with its wet markets, there will never be the end of these pandemics….

But it doesn’t look like they plan to put an end to these markets anytime soon.

I enjoy a greenmarket visit as much as anyone but I think of all of the people I’ve seen at Borough Hall pawing through the produce, squeezing tomatoes and tossing them back with their bare hands. In normal times, I could stomach that knowing that I’d rinse everything down when I get home. Now, definitely not.

    Yup. Hard pass.

On Saturday, all the produce was behind big tables, and only one worker wearing gloves was handling in.

  • Jorale-man

Thanks, good to know. That would be a smart move.

One worker wearing the same pair of gloves over and over again?

Touching same food over and over again. Yeah…. I’ll pass.

Out of curiosity, what do you think happens to the produce at “regular” grocery stores?
