The first cool day of the season was this weekend, and already our entire neighborhood smelled of woodsmoke. Wait a few months. No need to start lighting fires when it’s still 70º. It just adds to the air pollution. Also get your chimneys professionally serviced and inspected so you don’t burn down your house like Mr. Amis did.

What’s up with Fascati’s? Starting to worry.

  • AnonyMom

The same thing happened last year. They set a date to open and then just decided to extend their vacation. But too bad, they are missing out on the after school rush!

  • Anon12

The rat population at the promenade is getting out of hand. I’m starting to see these giant rats come out and roam under benches in broad daylight. A few weeks ago, there was a huge dead rat under a bench for about two or three days before it was cleaned up. While there has been work going on in the gardens, these vermin come out and look for the next best hiding places.

  • AnonyMom

The DOT has also been conducting ground penetrating ground radar pings and core sampling in preparation for the BQE rehabilitation. This would definitely disturb the rats. My suggestion would be to call 311 and make a report so the city has a record of their activity.

But after temperatures in the upper 90s, 70º feels cold!

For me, one of the best things about BH in the Fall is the smell of woodsmoke from fire places.

A bad thing: stinky gingko season, which has already started at the foot of Remsen Street.

  • Andrew Porter

Massage Envy on Remsen Street has closed. There’s a note on the door dated the 10th saying they’re shut. I suspect this is part of the harassment claims of nearly 200 women against the chain in recent months.

I appreciate the recommendations you’ve given me in the past and I’d love your thoughts once more. What’s the best hair salon in the neighborhood? I’m looking for cut and color.

  • Heightsman

I hear many women talk about The Heights Salon….my 2 cents.

    I guess it wasn’t a happy ending…

This is an outrage: Verizon hangs up on landline customers in Brooklyn http://www.brooklyneagle.com/articles/2018/9/11/verizon-hangs-landline-customers-brooklyn

Some people seem to over-anticipate autumn’s arrival (which is still more than a week off). I saw people wearing flannel and parkas today – and it was a very muggy 78F. Come on, not yet folks!

  • Jorale-man

I’ve been very happy with Studio 78 on Clark Street. The ambiance is nothing fancy but they seem very consistent.

No great loss. I went to one outlet years ago, and while I had an excellent massage, the hard sell to become a monthly paying member was over the top. Would never have gotten my money’s worth out of a membership at those rates.

Looks like the ginko tree on my block is pretty much dead.

this has been happening on the Lower East Side for years (since Sandy basically). verizon got plush contracts with the city and then decided to stop delivering service. they have a monopoly on phone service so there’s no incentive for them to fix the problem. perhaps with some press in a more moneyed area this problem could be addressed.

  • PierrepontSkin

They go on vacation every August. Sometimes it gets extended. No need to worry.

Spotted on the marketing poster for the “new” condo building at 70 Henry Street that replaced The Heights Cinema…the nabe has spoken :)

The same was written (in similar handwriting?) on the rendering that had been affixed to the construction fence back when the scaffolding was in place. Keen observers may have also spotted a certain familiar water tower sculpture adhered to the top of the building in the rendering. (check out http://tomfruin.com/)

“Verizon’s tactics are definitely Trumpian,” said one longtime Heights-based business owner, who fears retribution from Verizon.” (( eye roll))

Salon Van Sickel on Middagh Street is excellent for both men and women. I use them, and I see Judy Stanton in there, too. See info and reviews here:

After months of little service, terrible internet and claims that they would credit me when it was resolved, I decided to file an FCC complaint. All of a sudden, supervisors are calling me. Not that we have service yet!! It’s a nightmare. I hear spectrum isn’t great either…

I just saw two guys wheeling the iconic Armando’s sign—the one with the lobster—down Montague Street. Anyone have any idea where it’s going?

Is the return of Grand Canyon Burher still happening in that space?? Hope so!!

    Why didn’t you ask them?

  • Heightsman

How bad is Verizon? Guy on the phone today offered me an great deal. Would save me over $1200 a year vs. Spectrum.

  • MaggieO

depends what you’re getting from them. if fios is available i hear that’s decent. anything other than that i’d say don’t do it – they are so focused on fios (although they’re being very slow in actually making it available) that they have essentially stopped maintaining their copper infrastructure leaving folks SOL.

Grand Canyon sign is up today.
