Hearing on Pier Six Towers Thursday Morning

The next step in the litigation brought by the Brooklyn Heights Association to prevent construction of two high rise residential towers near Pier Six and the Atlantic Avenue entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park will take place this coming Thursday morning, November 2, at 9:30, at the New York Supreme Court, New York County, 80 Centre Street, Room 308, in Manhattan. The hearing will be before Justice Carmen St. George, who has replaced Justice Lucy Billings on the case because Justice Billings was assigned other duties.

Opponents of the proposed towers are encouraging all members of the public who can to attend the hearing.

Not that they need me to tell them but time is of the essence. The buildings are already going up down there. Pretty soon we’ll be in a Pierhouse situation, where it’s past the point of no return and we’re stuck with eyesores for decades to come.

It is already “past the point of no return”, they’re only going through the motions to give the appearance of
    “due process”…

While I hate to see green spaces and good architecture go down the tubes so that tall monstrosities can go up, I believe I’m finally resigned. That enormous high-rise that has now ruined the Brooklyn Bridge tower’s silhouette might be, for me, the last straw.

Futile to oppose the forces of greed. When our infrastructure can’t keep up with it all, there’ll be hell to pay. But it’s like rueing the passing of the old Quonset huts on Atlantic Avenue back in the late 1950s, or the Spanish guitar maker’s storefront across the street, or the used bookstore on Montague.

Rip Van Winkle couldn’t be more confused..

The ONLY way you can stop this kind of runaway situation is criminal indictments not only for the direct facilitators involved, but also for a range of Key actors in the local RE “industry”. When it becomes a rule that if you touch the Heights, it causes heat all over the place, you’ll see how fast people keep hands off the Heights and immediate area.

Civil actions in a situation like this are like using water or aspirin on a cancer…..

What charges do you propose and, thinking like a district attorney or attorney general, what charges do you propose for which you believe you stand a reasonable chance of getting a conviction?

  • Reggie

Extell’s “One Manhattan Square,” the building that I think you are referring to, is 800-feet tall, so I don’t argue with “enormous.” But it is being built on the former site of a Pathmark, so no green spaces or good architecture was harmed in the process.

  • B.

Yes, but it does ruin the bridge’s silhouette as seen from the Promenade. Please don’t be so literal. My first sentence was general, the second specific, and you’re right about Pathmark. And aren’t you glad I’ve given up? If I want pretty and green, I can visit the Hudson Valley.

The question is, do you remember the Quonset huts? Were you around in the 1950s?

  • Reggie

Every time I stand up, I am reminded of how old I am, but I am not quite that old. The Quonsett huts sound neat (since we are talking about the 50s). No, I am not glad that you have given up. Nor would I be pleased, however, if nostalgia would prevent you from enjoying positive changes; say, Brooklyn Bridge Park.

If anyone could have stopped the buildings, it would be the residents in 1BBP – they’ve got money and perhaps some influence. But I suppose they knew what they were getting into when they bought there.

  • ykwthis…

Well I’ll tell you Reggie, I’d leave it to the people. I’d just ask that people who say they don’t like what’s happening publish and fund an offer for information on corruption or wrongdoing in the RE or development field. The founders of this country knew the inherent wisdom in the people. And as the elites are causing things to go worse and worse, a public based corrective is what’s really needed.

Wow, Jeff! You really showed your colors this time!

FWIW the Pathmark was actually pretty important to the folks on the LES for whom it was their closest grocery store…

Sounds like you’re in favor of mob rule. I wonder what would happen if the people on this blog were allowed to decide your fate!

  • Reggie

I do know that and am sympathetic, but that is another topic.

  • MaggieO

    fair… :)
it’s really a monster, that building.
