DUMBO Gets A Lassen and Hennigs

To those commenters recently remarking on the empty storefronts and impatiently waiting for new food options to open:

Here you go.

Brooklyn Paper reports that the Montague Street deli is expanding to DUMBO, with plans to open on Water Street between Jay and Pearl. The new spot will have tables for eating in and a liquor license.

    Oh, dear! Two of them!

  • Andrew Porter

They also own Court Order. Two eateries becomes three, and a chain is born!

Isn’t L&H run or owned by a pair of twins? I thought I saw a pair of twins who sort of look like Michael Keaton. So each one gets a branch. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c3cf845921ad729a6ec5d6c16febd079d94e344ad73b39f57aaa9c38116a66ca.jpg

It always feels like the center island in L&H is wasted space. You have the coffee makers and some assorted potato chips stocked underneath but they could do so much more with that space. I wouldn’t mind seeing a wider variety of prepared items, or more produce or cheeses. Seems like a missed opportunity othewise.

L & H used to be a well stocked, real old-world type Delicatessen. But when the kids took over, they discontinued carrying every product that they didn’t sell a ton of.

so that is literally right by my office. i am now bookended lol

  • redlola

that coffee island is the best part. and the mini cupcakes

  • AbeLincoln

They’re located in the wasteland between DUMBO and VH??

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlsiLOnWCoI Arch Stanton

That may be so, but the store as a whole is nothing compared to what it once was.

  • redlola

um if you had ever left your log cabin, abe, you would know that there is more expensive condo development going on per square inch in that part of dumbo than anywhere else not to mention the tech triange complex that has taken over the watchtower building.

i dont need lassen for my weekly food shopping. in this decade, we have many other options. everything has a reason and a season and lassen’s current value to the community is in that island and dessert. that is where you will find most buying from.

  • AEB

Certainly the store now has absolutely nothing to do with the New York’s Eastern European delicatessens that gave the institution its fame. Lassen’s sells a dreary mish-mash of poorly made items, many of which can be had in better versions elsewhere. The baked goods are particularly depressing.

You don’t understand, its not about common groceries, they used to carry specialty food items that are hard to find. Even the quality of what they still have has declined. Sadly, you’ll never understand.

    And Monty Q’s.

The time I’ve spent standing in line at the deli counter, and the ubiquity of L&H delivery carts in the neighborhood, would suggest that other parts of the store attract some pretty good business as well.

  • redlola

that’s awesome teresa. my point specifically though is in response to the comment about the coffee island’s use.

  • Andrew Porter

I used to get my Orwasher’s Rye and Onion Pockets there, but they discontinued selling them. And, incidentally, no way are they a delicatessen.

Dumbo Heights. Website has pretty pictures, too:

Yes, I hate to say it but if I were in the market for a baked good and could choose between L&H and Maison Kaiser on Court Street, I’d opt for Kaiser. It’s a chain but the bread quality there is pretty amazing.

That said, I occasionally buy the prepared dinners at L&H, which are pretty good, if somewhat pricey.

On the other hand, there’s moving it off-shore….

  • StudioBrooklyn

For the record, I’m a big fan of their “Knickerbocker” sandwich, and when the supermarkets are out of ripe avocados the guys at the deli will sell consistently perfect ones for $2 each, regardless of market price. I’m not L&H’s biggest client, but with rents as they are I’m grateful they occupy that space and not some horrible alternative.

  • AbeLincoln

Not sure I would include that block in “DUMBO Heights”
