B.P. Adams Disapproves Library Plan, With Conditions

The Eagle reports that Borough President Eric Adams has “dissproved with conditions” the proposed redevelopment of the site of the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. Among the conditions he has included in his recommendation are that the new library have as much public space as the old one, including the space of the Business Library; that affordable housing be included at the library site, and that an elementary school be included in the new structure.

The Borough President’s views are not binding, but are taken into account in the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure. The matter will next be considered by the City Planning Commission, and the ultimate decision will be made by the City Council and Mayor. However, the views of local elected officials are usually given strong consideration.

“UM,” “LOL,” that is just a proposal which is still being discussed. There are actually two community meetings coming up soon on the issue. Nothing’s been solved. “LOL.” And even if the proposal goes through, it still doesn’t entirely solve the overcrowding problem at PS8. It’s a short-term fix. “LOL.”

  • HereToStay

LOL. You only think about yourself… there is NO NEED for a new school. The number of kids ebbs and flows over the years. We have three grammar schools all within a 15-20 minute walk. Get over yourself already.

  • Willow Street Watch

This blog is now so jammed with rain puddle deep thinking and well, let’s say “suspicious” posts that it hardly represents this community. Posting here has really become npnrewarding there are so few people of judgement and so many with ulterior interrsts.

Also, the blog is becoming increasingly censored….

  • Anonymouse

Ok, but why NOT a school? Why NOT affordable housing? I don’t see anything wrong with either. My kids are at PS8, I agree a new school is less necessary if rezoning goes forward, but it doesn’t seem inherently evil to have a new school and affordable or mixed housing. I don’t understand. Maybe not super tall tower – does affordable housing automatically go hand in hand with super tall tower? Thanks.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

You’ve lost all credibility with the “UM, that was all solved…LOL” comment, so maybe you sit the next couple of plays out? But in response, two of the three grammar schools you are referring to are out of financial reach of the ordinary citizen, and not a realistic option. As tax payers, good public schools are a fair priority to insist upon. And the number of kids needing those schools is only going to increase dramatically with the influx of more condos currently on-line. And “get over yourself already”??? If “getting over myself” means that I should stop caring about public education for our community, then no, I will not get over myself. I don’t think that is an insular, self-serving priority to have, which suggests that I am only “thinking about myself.” I’m thinking about our community at large. Quite the opposite.

  • HereToStay

LOL as if YOU have ANY credibility whatsoever. HA! Yeah, you are really thinking about the community… What a laugh. You are so self-serving! Why ON EARTH would we spend millions and millions of tax dollars on a new school when we have 3 public schools right here.

  • HereToStay

    -Hi Pot.
    -Well hello there kettle…

  • ColumbiaHeightster

I’m sorry, I really don’t follow what you are saying. PS8 is the only public school serving our community. What are the other two you are talking about? I’m honestly asking you.

  • HereToStay

There’s 8, 307, 261, 287 and others too — not to mention private schools. Moving students around depending upon which schools are most crowded is very easy. There is no need for more schools. The math just makes no sense at all — do you think NYC is just making you suffer? They are not building new schools here because there is absolutely positively no need. At all.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

307, 261 and 287 are not in Brooklyn Heights. Not sure if you lost track of the conversation, but we are talking about public schools in Brooklyn Heights. This is the “Brooklyn Heights Blog.” My goodness you are hostile. Not sure where that is coming from, but good luck with whatever has gone so wrong for you lately. All the best!

  • HereToStay

OMG – we are all apart of New York City. Besides, more than Brooklyn Heights kids went to PS 8 therefore all schools closeby are an option for mixing and matching. You must be from the suburbs – some schools in NYC are not even in your immediate area… I went to High School 20 minutes away from my house. I am not going to comment on this any longer, you are irrational and you do not understand the numbers behind constructing a school… Enjoy your day!

    ^ Hostile.Yikes.

Not hostile at all — you are unstable…

The BP has put together your typical kind of low-level politician’s laundry list of everything everyone wants, almost. For example, he forgot to tie in a million dollar upgrade of the disgraceful entry to the Clark St. subway. But wait, what else? What about adding a few rooms for the homeless? How about a treatment center for Veterans since the park celebrates the victory of WWII? A nice restroom for the many bus drivers whose routes terminate right across the way would be a boon to them.

This BP is not serious and shouldn’t be taken seriously. We have much more significant wants about this forthcoming high-rise like its height, bulk and shadow casting and its permanent impact on our quality of life.

Marty was much more than a silly character, he was a serious joke. Eric Adams is terrific and (although I am not at all in favor of giving away public space for private development) these are decent recommendations.

  • HereToStay

I think you would find that THE VAST majority of Heights residents would disagree… Marty was just a guy that cared for Brooklyn and had a passion for what made it great. Adams is just a politician x 10 and only out to side with people who may help him in the future with other offices he will seek. Don’t kid yourself.

  • heights res

Would love to see your data to back up that fantasy. Marty was a nebish who consistently took care of just a select few neighborhoods in Bklyn, mostly fawned after the “big” boys in Manhattan and gave out green bagels once a year. Adams is an intelligent guy who looks out for all of Bklyn as his job requires.

  • HereToStay

It’s not a fantasy. I’m rather well known in the neighborhood and I would be pained to think of a single solitary dinner guest of ours that would ever utter the words “terrific” and “Eric Adams” in the same sentence. LOL.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

    ^ More hostility. Ugh.

^ Hehehe. Don’t worry – a good therapist will help you work out your inferiority complex… Ugh.

The bus drivers use the bathrooms in the Library. And I remember when the entry to the Clark Street subway was upgraded—where do you think those mosaics at the Clark and Henry Street entrances came from?

They have not been maintained—notice there are some pieces missing, and the sushi place whose table obscures the one next to the Clark Street entrance. Then there’s the horrible ceiling panels, which obscure the skylight covered over during World War 2 and never reopened.

Here’s a view of the subway at Clark Street you may never have seen before:

^ The hostility continues. Yuck. Remember the time you said “Um, that was all solved… DUMBO being taken out of PS 8″? That was HILARIOUS.

“I’m rather well known.” Haha, that’s great! I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

  • heights res

Sorry, lol – just because a couple of your (probably one percenter) dinner guests don’t like him doesn’t really make for valuable data….

  • HereToStay

Here we go again on this blog with the ‘us’ versus ‘them’ – its as though you were brainwashed and never came out of it… I am not a one-percenter and even if I was, that would have nothing to do with it. You need to move to California…

  • HereToStay

What a great photo. Had no idea a church used to be across there…

Think (hope) you meant, even if I “were”, not “was”. But your position is even sadder if you’re not….
