and what good would a premises permit do? nothing..this ddidn’t occur in a home or business…know the law before you start spouting off information that is incorrect

  • StoptheChop

The BBP and the NYPD keep claiming that the other is responsible, whatever the issue. Swell.

Has anyone been in the new home nicknacks store next to the Japanese restaurant and produce market on Atlantic near Clinton? I was curious what the deal is with the store exactly. It would be great if the BHB did little reports on new retail in the area once in a while. I realize things have been tough since Homer’s passing but just wanted to throw that out there as an idea. I’m really glad that the blog is continuing along.

I disagree. If you report an assault via 911, the 84th precinct will have at least a couple of squad cars in the area within a couple of minutes, maybe sooner…enough to catch a perp who (as mentioned above) more likely than not is still within several blocks (and probably drawing attention there too)

  • Bornhere

Unfortunately, it was more than 30 minutes before an officer was able to respond, and by that time, the woman had left and the kid was long gone.

  • Seeking Peace & Quiet

Has anyone noticed that suddenly there seems to be a change in flight paths, directly over Brooklyn Heights? It used to only be every once in a while, but since last week at times it’s been every few minutes.
Does anyone know what the deal is?

I reported graffiti on the side of the building on 35 Clark St on 12/30 using the 311 app and it’s still there. I don’t understand why the super or maintenance staff doesn’t remove the graffiti on this building.

  • Henry St.

My husband asked me about this a few days ago. I’ve always planes early in the morning on cloudy days, but my husband, who works at home, says he’s noticed many more flights during the day.

With all the talk of “quality of life” offenses, I recommend that residents begin to see deafening, sleep-destroying noise as a blatant waiver of our protections under the NYC Noise Code.
Noise on the level we have experienced over the last few years are really “quality of life” violations. Noise is not merely a dismissible, pesky annoyance. It is a human rights violation.

Get a couple of people to go with you. You can put in ear plugs & put on ear protectors, walk over, and start unplugging things. It’s valuable equipment—the DJ or whomever has something to lose there, and doesn’t want repeat visits from ticked off citizens who are unafraid to put their hands on his stuff. Unplug phono cords or electrical—whichever is more convenient.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation has created an attractive nuisance by its over-supply of basketball courts. It happens that almost every park space east of Adams Street is full of such courts. They are abundant while other recreational facilities, like badminton courts or volley-ball or beach-ball courts are rare or non-existent. It is clear that today’s are attracting and undisciplined and truant crowd. They are out to create hell to mask their miserable lives or make them tolerable.

They time has come for the Corporation to re-consider the recreational facilities in the light of the compatability of thmost

    good question….. a dying breed!

    I’m still alive.

  • Tired of the chop

I have. Seems to be a mix of police, army and tourist copters. Oops – there goes one now over the promenade! Absent organized protest, the only remedy is to call 311. The tourist copter company bragged last winter that the number of complaints were down (doh). Now that the weather is good, the need is to call every day. A drag, but there it is…

  • mac

It has to do with the PA creating new flight paths..the other mornings it was the fog..but it also has a lot do to with the construction at JFK on one of the main runways…they have to use a different runway which necessitates a different approach for the planes..

Representatives of the Boards from 75 St. and 101 Clark met with representatives from the Community Affairs Office of the precinct, the Parks Department and a local elected official representative regarding the sound from Cadman Plaza Park. Basically, we were told that the park is public and groups have a right to reserve the space and use amplified sound, including that awful bass.. The decibel level, if a complaint is made, would be measured from inside your apartment with the window closed, not at the site, and that’s assuming it would be measured. While Community Affairs was supportive of our issues, the only agreement that was made included no sound amplification before 10:00am,(including sound checks) and for no more than 4 hours, and it must end by 7:00PM. Groups will be monitored by the police to insure compliance,(and that did not happen on Sunday) but everyone MUST call 311 and lodge complaints when you feel it is too loud or if the police are not monitoring it appropriately. This will go on unless all residents of our area continue to complain and contact elected officials about the quality of life issues. If we don’t band together, this will continue at Cadman Plaza Park.

  • MaryT

Thanks, Robert. The ‘sound check’ started around 10am and the event lasted until 4pm. That’s 6 hours. Also, based on Sunday’s decibels/bass levels, and what I still heard in my apartment with windows closed and headphones on, it is possible that a meter would register a violation, especially for the bass. A puzzlement: Why is it OK to flood the neighborhood with noise that keeps residents prisoners in their apartments? And we still don’t have a list of when future events are scheduled… nothing shows on the Cadman Park events calendar.

http://www.stopthechopnynj.com is trying to do something about the constant, noise polluting helitours. deBlasio doesn’t deny the well-documented health and environmental impacts from helicopter drone (which experts consider to be a totally different animal than “regular” city noise), but he refuses to address this issue, despite the 20+ other elected officials who want a ban from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, and which he could do with the stroke of a pen. (And ps– we all know the 311 system is useless. The industry and the (captured) EDC use it to try to prove the negative.)

  • StoptheChop

Yep– the “season” started as of Easter weekend. Many days, and especially on weekends, there are 14-16 tourist helicopters in nonstop operation, including idling at the Heliport when not in flight (so, up to 40 flights/hour, for 10 hours/day). We can expect this level of activity until next January, when we get a couple of months of relative relief — even though the tourists (and deBlasio himself) would never permit them over their own homes, schools, parks, houses of worship, businesses….

  • StoptheChop

Oh, but this is NYC, where people are seemingly entitled to be as noisy and disruptive as they want to be, and no one can ever say “no you can’t”.

  • Seeking Peace & Quiet

That explains it. It’s definitely more than the average chopper.
Does anyone know what organization one should reach out to to launch a complaint? We should not accept this kind of thing.

  • Roberto Gautier

When speaking about the disturbances from helicopters, jets in lowered flight paths, pa systems in Cadman Plaza Park, honking cars, backup beeps on construction vehicles, roaring motorcycles …. to seemingly “normal” people, it’s stunning to see the clueless look in their eyes and their response to noise that has kept people in a continuous sleep-deprived state (sounds like Abu Ghraib) – it’s New York City, “deal with it.” Too bad that Mayor Di Blasio seems to be “progressively” more “clueless.”

  • BadmintonGuy

Only have badminton gear. You are welcome to join if you have the pickleball gear.

  • cmpizz

Just the other day my building was tagged and our security cameras got video and a good image of the guy. We sent it to the police department immediately. Hope they catch the guy.

  • cmpizz

I am no longer receiving BHB in my inbox every morning. Is anyone else experiencing this?

  • StoptheChop
  • heights res

    Yes

  • Willow Street Watch

I suggest you call the FAA, office of the inspector general..find the form for a FOI request and..find how the allowed flight paths have recently changed and WHY..

You have to force out the truth with all of the agencies…

  • Willow Street Watch

I mentioned last week that when a LOT of the helicopters overhead have down links of FEDERAL frequencies…so your inquiries should be to the FAA but you should also be asking what fed agencies need to be on stationary post for hours at like 1 AM ……

  • ShinyNewHandle

I’ve gone into that new store—the one with the ultra-tasteful, curated merch. I call those CLS’s—Cute Little Shoppes. It is everyone’s dream to open a Cute Little Shoppe… I can’t afford that stuff.
