I smell exhaust every morning when I step outside my building! No idling regulations should be enforced!

  • Tired

Hearing it now at seaport. Can’t sleep

  • redlola

i hate where this community is headed. never thought i’d utter these words, but it may be time to move

  • DIBS

    To where??? NJ????

  • Willow Street Watch

First, we lost many of the most important financial types, both by death and to foreign flight. A lot of the older families left or died off. Then the influx of new (ugh) money. Now were in serious danger of losing the other major stabilization factor: our most gifted. So increasingly, this is an empty shell. Its a basic law that nature abhors a vacuum, and healthy materials rarely fill the vacuum.

  • AEB

Loss of those “important financial types”–tragique!

  • memeadjuster

Good question. So many honest businesses have come on gone over the years mainly due to exorbitant rents, but this business endures.

  • BrooklynCoffeeLover

“ware zone atmosphere”? A bit dramatic there, aren’t we?

  • GHB

Does the fortune include a happy ending? That could explain a lot!

  • ColumbiaHeightster

    What’s wrong with “new” money?

  • Janice

    boycottfreshdirect.nyc

  • suzanne goss

    what’s that a euphemism for?

  • redlola

i don’t know how to drive so that is not an option for that reason and several others. frankly, anywhere that i can still find a true bedroom community that is not being stretched beyond its limits by incessant development and throngs of tourists. the coolest stuff (ie the movie theater) and the peace and quiet are ebbing away as inconvenience and expense continues to rise.

  • redlola

personally, i don’t care what kind of money or professional categories live here as long as they share a common respect for the community. The residents of the heights currently don’t bother me but expect that to change as they continue slapping up these tupperware for humans developments. Also not happy about hotels and such and the stuff like shootouts in BBP and weed smoking on the promenade at 4pm when small children are all over the place.

PSA–yesterday my wife witnessed a woman permitting her dog to urinate on a pallet of goods waiting to be taken into Gristede’s. Didn’t get the phone out in time to snap a shame-photo (maybe it’s for the best? –that’s a separate debate) but buyers beware: this happens.

The basic structure of the Heights Always was that it was a little England and a ghetto for the gifted…period

Anyone who doesn’t recognize this core truth of what the Height was and how it got to be the desirable place it was, has no real understanding.

A environment like the Heights only arises from the presence of a very specific human material. The ability to cause a high civilization is restricted to a very small sector of the population

My parents used to observe: change the people, change the city…..

  • StudioBrooklyn

One could ask the same about any of the countless fortune tellers that dot the NYC landscape. I heard once it had something to do with organized crime, or perhaps it’s a cottage industry that closes some kind of real estate loophole? I can think of a handful of other businesses Brooklyn Heights needs more.

  • StudioBrooklyn

Cities, like sports teams and languages, are more like rivers than ponds, and the sooner one accepts this truth the more prepared s/he will be to navigate life.

  • Willow Street Watch

No, anyone who has actually been in a modern war zone knows that one of the real stress is sleep deprivation due to overflights.

  • Willow Street Watch

People who while affluent, have no connection to the culture or values of the people who caused the Heights to arise. And its impossible to recreate or maintain a system which you neither understand its inner technology or have the intelligence to understand what is right before you.

  • LTindaBH

Has anyone tried calling 311 for the idling Fresh Direct truck issue? We have same at 9am Sundays on Hicks St. Curious as to whether it’s effective.

  • nswz11

    Well said.

  • suzanne goss

ugh. A ghetto for the gifted, only if gifted = envelopes stuffed with money brought over on the mayflower. I’m so glad I was raised in Cadman Plaza. We were the ghetto of the middle class ethnics within the ghetto. And my connection to the culture of the Heights is as “rich” as anyone’s. And probably much longer, too.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

So only people born and raised in Brooklyn Heights are able to maintain its integrity? That’s offensive. I have no “connection” to the people who caused the “Heights to arise” – are you saying that my family isn’t welcome here? I was born and raised in a different county altogether, and me, my young family, and our taxes do plenty in this community every day to make it a better place. It’s the line of thinking like yours that is the real detriment to our community. The Heights may be my adopted home, but antiquated and isolationist thinking like yours will prevent OUR community from embracing evolving values and effecting positive change around us. Nothing stays the same, no matter how much you want it to. Embrace it and be a part of it, for the good, or don’t and become a bitter person complaining on an internet message board.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

    Ugh indeed. Disgusting.

  • Willow Street Watch

Your mindsets are so removed from observable reality that it’s hard to know where to begin to address what you have presented.

First, if it makes no difference what human material the Heights contains, then why as you so move away from the classic mix of families with lineage and the gifted, the neighborhood now experiencing fast increasing serious new poblems and other “changes”?

Unless people understand, respect and do everything to preserve the unique chemistry which caused the Heights and reject the distorted and dangerous concept of interchangeability, this area, and any high civil-
Ization would/will continue its decline into, well, exactly what you see in BBP.

  • Willow Street Watch

There is little in any way to suggest that Cadman Plaza is part of the Genuine Heights culture or atmosphere. This is not to say good people loive there. But they are simply seperate from the people who founded and are capible of maintaining the Heighhts.

And by the way, a lot of the authors, scientists, classical artists of the last few decades here had little money; subsisting on irregular incomes. But their dedication to their work and higher values certainly was a very major shaper of the Heights.

You don’t need money to have culture, but as the now quickly emerging state of the Heights shows, you can have lots of financial assets and have no culture and thus be a distructive entity. This is like thinking you can pour sand into a crankcase. Uh, yes, your going to have a “system decline” Very shortly.

On Clark Street this afternoon, a woman lifted her dog over the fence surrounding a tree that had a sign “Please curb your dog” in order for the dog to do “its business”. I nervously, but gently reminded her about the sign. Her response was to curse at me. What should people like myself do or say when we see this?
And people like her probably do not read this blog as they seem to have little regard for their neighbors. Even if I took a picture with my cellphone, what would I do with it?

  • suzanne goss

go back to England. you are horrible.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

    Please leave.
