BHB: Are you suggesting that your opponents talk doesn’t match their walk?
DB: Exactly. I’m not backed by these corrupt machines and their deception to use our community institutions as a bank to profit against our interests.
BHB: What do you see as a realistic future for LICH, given it’s current circumstances?
The real answer to your question, unfortunately, is that our voters and our neighborhoods have no power over the LICH site and the Pier 6 site, or the [Brooklyn Heights] Library, for that matter.
DB: This is where it gets really convoluted, and the voters have to understand that this is a very complicated issue. I’ll try to give as simple an explanation as I can. The real answer to your question, unfortunately, is that our voters and our neighborhoods have no power over the LICH site and the Pier 6 site, or the [Brooklyn Heights] Library, for that matter. But it’s worse. My opponents, consultant lobbyist, BerlinRosen, they try to mislead the public about their own healthcare solution. Lobbyist BerlinRosen was controlling the PAC for One New York while sending out the deliberately misleading LICH letter that I just mentioned at the same time that they were controlling Peter Sikora’s campaign. It’s a violation of federal election law for a PAC to coordinate with a political campaign, so this needs to be investigated.
Further, these other interests that are controlling and taking the power from our neighborhood. Frank Carone, he’s the lifelong law partner of [Brooklyn Democratic] party boss Frank Seddio [Editors Note: Mr. Carone is considerably younger than Mr. Seddio, age 67]. Frank Carone is involved with these condos, he is both in the park and LICH. He’s the lawyer for Lori Schomp’s temporary restraining order [against BBP Pier 6 housing development], and he was the lawyer for SUNY and Carl McCall in the LICH deal that closed the hospital. Is [Carone’s involvement with Pier 6 lawsuit] another shakedown at election time like Squadron and his [vote over BBP housing]? You look at the past with Seddio and Frank Carone: they shake down developers, they’re affiliated with Carl Kruger [former NYS senator who pleaded guilty to corruption charges] you know where he’s spending his time these days, and the neighborhood community board leaders that Kruger worked with….
BHB: When you look at the deals being made now in Brooklyn, you have to look at them with a careful eye. But you’re saying that the voters can trust what you say.
DB: First of all, people are going to die because of this hospital closure. They [voters] don’t even have to trust me to understand what’s going to happen. But, people are loyal to those who get them elected. And… I’m not attached to these machines, I’m not attached to this money. I am attached to the voters. They’re the ones I’m talking to. They’re the ones who are going to get me elected. They’re the ones I’m going to be loyal to.
BHB: But once elected, the challenge is to stay in power….
DB: Why do people have to stay in power?! They don’t have to. It’s the people’s decision for them to stay in power for life. And that’s exactly our point. Until we stop the control of these lobbyists, political machines, these candidates, these elected officials who want to stay in power for life, we really have no control over what’s happening in our communities, zoning of LICH or otherwise.
