Where Was the 84th Precinct While Vandals Devastated North Brooklyn Heights and Beyond

Last night vandals wreaked havoc in Brooklyn Heights. The amount of damage to property and cars in the area and shown on Karl’s video demands that the question be asked — where was the NYPD?

With at least two recent incidents of vandalism in the area recently and increased foot traffic due to the popularity of Brooklyn Bridge Park, it’s simply ponderous that additional patrols have not been deployed to the area.

The damage continues all the way to Montague Street as a BHB tipster sends us these photos — again where was the NYPD?

This comes after a group of three or four thugs disrupted business at least two North Heights eateries on Thursday night and another (perhaps and likely the same) began fighting on Willow Street causing neighbors to call police.

DEVELOPING…

Update: Brooklyn Heights resident and former mayoral candidate Joe Lhota tweets:

Update: The BHA’s Judy Stanton tells us via email that she spoke to the precinct captain at the 84th today. They claim the following:

1) Nobody called 911 to report the vandalism in Karl’s video.
2) Cops were on duty in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Brooklyn Heights on Friday night. The captain claims no calls were made to 911 about the rowdy group in the North Heights.
3) Five people have called 311 from the area since Thursday night but not about vandalism.
4) There will be more police in response to this post and the BHA’s call this weekend.

We can assume that Ms. Stanton spoke to the 84th before a report the we are aware of regarding one of the incidents in Karl’s video was made. We are waiting to hear if the 84th has responded.

Update: The business owner informs us that he did speak to someone at the 84th who said they would send officers to the location. The call was made around noon on Saturday. No patrol or officer ever arrived.

As for NO ONE calling 911 about one of the rowdy groups on Thursday night in the North Heights, that is not true. How can we be so sure – I MADE THE CALL. There was a response, but we have no further update.

I believe that same tagger was found to be a local heights resident as well.

They can’t have it both ways. They either have the manpower to cover the neighborhood, or they don’t. They say they’re patrolling. I call bullshit.

The St. George Hotel conversion into student dorms brought those particular taggers into the neighborhood, a separate development. In 2009, “Rocky” quoted the Brooklyn Paper:

“Cops identified their suspects as Rex Ikwueme, aka Rex, a 20-year-old freshman at Pace University, originally from Maryland. His 19-year-old partner in crime is Joseph Daiuto, also known as Guder, from Hawthorne, N.J., police said.”

Overall, I think the St. George students respect the neighborhood, as do the vast, vast majority of park visitors. That doesn’t mean this vandalism would have happened anyway.

    Agreed!

The giving of bailouts to companies as a reward for mismanagement and malfeasance is foolishness particularly to someone who has studied economics. I don’t care what party they belong to. GM and Chrysler should have been allowed to file bankruptcy, reorganize and get their fiscal house in order. Something which Ford has done with no assistance from the taxpayers. Why is it that a successful company should be punished by having their competition propped up? The idea that somehow the world economy was saved is laughable. PS. Politicians give handouts not taxpayers, politicians have grown accustomed to being gracious with the people’s money, particularly when there is a quid pro quo.

BTW my last “off-topic” comment was an attempt to get back to the original point, that we are witnessing a rise in and general acceptance of, class envy. It is promoted in every institution, particularly education and politics. It should come as no surprise to us when persons no longer respect that which is the property of others. People who work hard and do their best to maintain their property ought to have a reasonable expectation that their property is secure.

I agree with you on this one, Phil, old boy. As Bernie Sanders (a socialist) said in today’s posting:” More tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires and large corporations….We say NO.”

When I saw this post I thought it was just a few flower pots and a bench or two, but they really did some serious damage to those vehicles and quite a few of them to boot. This HAD to have been a group of jerks passing through causing a ruckus, I’m glad no one was attacked or threatened, as this could have escalated. We should see if this is a trend, and if the timing coincidences with anything by the park closing or local places shutting down.
Like everyone else, I hope our neighborhood remains the quiet, safe haven that it has been for the 5 years I have lived here and perhaps this was just a random occurrence.

For what its worth — I emailed the Park via the “contact us” link, and (1) asked them the official park hours, (2) what was done to enforce the closing (since I’ve been at the park many times prior to 6AM with my dogs, and have never once been stopped and (3) informed them that when I got to the park at 6AM Saturday morning, I saw a bunch of unsavory people mid-way into the park who looked like they’d spent the night there. The person who responded said she had not heard any speculation before my email that there could be a connection to the park visitors and the vandalism on Hicks & other streets friday night/sunday morning. Anyway, the official park hours are 6AM – 1AM, except for piers 2 & 5 where the park closes at 11PM. She finds it suprising that I’ve never been stopped for being in the park prior to 6AM, and that there are regular nypd and park personnel patrolling the area. How fortunate we are to have a world class park so close, but not if this is the new normal.

Word! Gimme five. (Not too high.)

You give my favorite bagel substitute a bad name. I take it that you’re implying that the vandals were from outside the neighborhood and darker pigmented than you. Immediately this very minor crime ( still annoying and more for those affected) becomes the mayor’s fault. I assume it will be Obama’s by your next post. How on Earth is this a hate crime? I feel sorry for you.

  • petercow

Ah.. so DeBlasio gave a “stand down” order, to the 84th pct? BENGHAZI!!

  • bialy

Brix, you are dead wrong . I know these vandals were from outside the neighborhood. As to dark pigment , I don’t have a clue how you got to that conclusion. Its your own stupid, self righteous and blind way of looking at things .. I never said that people of color had anything to with it at all ! The point is when these things happen in neighborhoods dominated by various races, colors, ethnicities, religions etc that some people always call it a hate crime in those areas. There is no dominant group of anyone in the Heights that some huckster or the media can make buck off, so its not a hate crime and there will be no investigation as no one outside this area gives a damn about it at all.. There is no card to play and no money to be made by anyone in reporting or investigating it .. Get it you fool ? I actually think it was hipster anarchists that hate everyone for the record.

  • Brixtony

Bi – Wow looks like I really hit a nerve there. So…it’s clear from your line of thinking that the perps were wealthy white kids from another neighborhood – probably Park Slope. If my guess is wrong, please explain where you ”know” these vandals were from and how you came to that conclusion. Your ultra-defensive reaction to my comments lead me to believe that you doth protest too much, as was obvious to many who read this. You’re clearly an unhappy person and I wish you a better tomorrow .

This is horrible. Since the opening of the Pier 2 basketballs courts there has been an influx of Ghetto folks… I can’t even get a game anymore at the courts. Something needs to be done. Definitely need more police presence at pier 2 and in the BH neighborhood to scare some of these of the bad crowds. The suspension bridge should also be closed 11pm.
