A driver being pursued by NYPD officers was hit a tractor trailer and was decapitated earlier today on the Atlantic Avenue off ramp of the BQE.
DNA Info: The driver, whose name was not released, had just had his black four-door Infinity sedan pulled over by the NYPD when he sped away and headed for the eastbound BQE’s Atlantic Avenue off-ramp at a high rate of speed, according to police and witness Joseph Vega. A tractor trailer was parked at a red light at the end of the ramp, witnesses said.
“When he exited here he was doing 70 or 80 mph. The trailer was waiting for the light. He impacted the left side of the car. He tried to avoid it, but he hit the right side of the truck,” Vega, 59, said.
The Brooklyn Eagle notes that the accident happened right in front of embattled LICH:
Brooklyn Eagle: FDNY told the Eagle that the injured woman was taken by ambulance to Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park. Two other injured passengers refused treatment.
A person at the scene told the Brooklyn Eagle that “a police chase ended with the car crashing into the truck.” The man was told by a witness that the driver’s head was sheared off.
A white sheet was draped over a smashed black four-door Infinity stopped just behind LICH’s parking garage.
The SUNY board of trustees officially voted to sell LICH to a developer Wednesday morning. Once treating more than 50,000 patients a year in its ER, the limited emergency department there now can handle only minor health issues.
