Open Thread: The Best Burger in Brooklyn Heights 2014

It’s been two years since we last asked the question – who has the best burger in Brooklyn Heights?

For this discussion, we like to keep the conversation within the boundaries of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District which leaves Shake Shack (Fulton Ferry/DUMBO) and Bareburger (Cobble Hill) out of the running.

That said, comment away!

    Probably Jack The Horse

Not the best but probably the most formidable: the Burger of Champions at the Park Plaza Diner. Comes with cheese, bacon, an egg, fries and sauteed onions. A complete hallucinatory debauch–you won’t eat for days after ingesting it.

  • Mingo

Colonie’s burger gets my vote. Though the gooey egg yolk might not be to everyone’s taste.

Just a very decadent rich burger that tastes good and fills you up nicely.

In Cobble Hill rather than the Heights, but the burger at Karloff is sublime. And they now delivery through Seamless.

    Heights cafe.. bar none

I’m partial to the Siggy’s grass-fed burger. Love the chili powder or whatever it is that they put in it.

I don’t want to come across as a hater but Shake Shack is the worst. Even my kids say, “it’s really good dad until my stomach starts to hurt”. The fries are a clumpy mess of grease. Equally bad regardless of location.

Waterfront Ale House! Stop the thread.

  • Heightsman

    Pretty fun!

Has the landscape for burgers in the hood actually changed since the last roundup? Is there anything new and worthy? Or are the best burgers in the area still just outside the bounds of the neighborhood? (Including Henry Public, 282, Shake Shack, Bareburger, Bar Tabac).

  • DIBS

    Tabac is good.

  • Daddyo

The long-gone Promenade Restaurant had the best burgers. Montague St. Saloon not bad either. And no freakin’ egg yolks included! (PS And Burger King served a better burger than anything you can eat at Banana Republic…:)

EWW! The entire menu there is just plain ol mediocre. Dont get why people pay to eat there — and their renovation was a joke… The mini sliders at Custom House are okay, but nobody really makes a good burger in the Heights. Agree that most good places are on the outskirts of BH.

    Andrew and DIBS,

I can’t resist either. Bar Tabac is the only place in the neighborhood I will eat a burger and fries. Superfine is also very good. Bar Tabac is worth the extra blocks especially when they have live music to chew and drink to on a warm evening on a table outside in the front.. Heavenly.

    Loved the Promenade Restaurant

Henry Public serves exceptionally fine burgers (whoops, just re-read the criteria. Just outside the zone)

The best thing The Heights Cafe serves is the burger and fries. It’s not too greasy.

I’m surprised no one said Five Guys. So there I said it. Five Guys. I know it’s not fancy, and sure it’s a chain, but for pure indulgence I don’t think any other burger in the neighborhood beats it. Even moreso on a value-adjusted basis, can’t possibly be topped. The people in the BH outpost are also very friendly.

At Custom House on Montague Street, the Brooklyn Burger is FABULOUS. Even the bun is better than most. The meat is tender and juicy, and the fixings (including bacon and a fried egg) are fresh and taaaasty! Try it!

  • BKFoodie

Fair point. Five Guys does make a darn good burger… Fries are not so great, despite being fresh cut.

I enjoyed the video of Sam Sifton, Karl. Thank you. He was a Grace Church School student and I had him in “June School” many years ago! :-) His younger brother Toby was in my K class. Great family and his Dad was a Federal Court Judge. This has nothing to do with burgers however! hahaha.

  • Ann B Chapin

    spicey fries are pretty good-

  • JayBee

    Agreed!

  • JayBee

I agree. But you must eat the fries immediately – as with most fries…

  • Shannon

Jack the Horse, with caramelized onions.

  • http://www.hollownickel.com Hollow Nickel

Our burger at Hollow Nickel is juicy and delicious. Plus, it’s served with handcut fresh-daily french fries that are out of this world. There’s also a weekday lunch special 12 PM to 4 PM, $10 for a burger & beer. Fries not included on that one, but they’re worth ordering on the side. :)
