The reading will feature works by Rumi, Pablo Neruda, Ernesto Cardenal, Allen Ginsberg, Ishmael Reed, Marge Piercy, and Wendell Berry, read by poet and Brooklyn Heights resident Daniela Gioseffi, winner of an American Book Award and PEN Fiction Award, and by poet Nancy Mercado, a recent guest on PBS News Hour.

I attended the poetry reading this evening. The poets Ms. Gioseffi and Ms. Mercado were excellent. While focusing on the environment they spoke of corporate dominance of our society.
Ms . Gioseffi -a Heights resident-was unaware of the Friends of the Library position in favor of the destruction rather then the refurbishing and modernizing of our library. Proceeds from her book sales were to go to the “Friends Group” You may followup with them at http://www.Eco-Poetry.org. Attendance was less than 20 which says something about the “Friends Group” and their leader
Deborah Hallen. Maybe the “Friends Group” as well as the BPL executive team and Board needs new faces.

Hats off to you, Marsha! This is an expert example of weaving one’s own political agenda into posts that barely (if at all) provide support for doing so.

I know that one must…persevere; it’s hard to get people’s attention regarding any subject, much less bring them around to one’s own point of view. But really, this sort of ambushing, no matter how subtly accomplished, doesn’t win friends, finally. It even alienates those who are already on your side.

A Friends event that benefits by selling books and then uses those funds to advocate for the library destruction plan is not fair game..???

Thank you for providing this information, which wasn’t included in the event description above.

Marsha – STFU. Seriously. You make me want to burn books.

How sad that our local library can’t host a joyous evening of poetry and literary enjoyment without some nasty person like Ms. Rimmler injecting her politics. People on both sides of this issue need to grow up, most of all, unfortunatly, the CDL crowd. Deborah Hallen is a dedicated activist who has devoted years of her life to sponsoring great little events like last night’s reading, and promoting our library. How dare you, Ms. Rimmler, attack Ms. Hallen and threaten her simply because she dares to disagree with your politics.
We don’t live in the Soviet Union Ms. Rimmler.

  • marshasrimler

    how sweet of you

  • marshasrimler

Debrah Hallen is a petty dictator who has not allowed those that disagree with her to join Friends of the Library. She took dues from people and then held secret meeting of the Friends in her home not allowing them to participate. If someone disagrees with her.
she tries to have them ejected by the police which have thus far failed to follow her lead.
She has supported the library destruction plan even though she disagrees it due to fear of losing her position. She is not a good leader and needs to be replaced

It’s really getting old that everytime the library is mentioned Marsharimler has to rant her position on the status or lack thereof of the library. I think most who read the blog on a somewhat regular basis know her position on the matter. I don’t see the need to keep spelling it out for the readers over and over.

  • marshasrimler

Chubby.. this needs to remain in the public eye until it is resolved.. sorry. after the destruction plan is stopped I will stop. what is your real name?? If you find my posts OLD don’t read them

  • Chubby Burkhardt

I suspect the people are going to make their decision regarding the fate of the library regardless of your ranting away. I second Jazz – STFU. Let’s save all the hot air for balloons.

  • marshasrimler

chubby..Deborah Hallen is full of Hot Air.. so are you without
    your real name..-STFU to you

  • Chubby Burkhardt

I’m done with you you Trollop. I’ve said my peace and moving on.

  • marshasrimler

    why so insulting and nasty.
that not Heights like. tell us who you really are.. what is your name ?

  • Ruth Eiss

I agree with Marsha that the Friends Group needs friends who are truly friends, just as the Citizens’ Advisory Committee needs to heed citizen advice

Save the ClockTower, save the hill valley ClockTower! that clock was struck by lightning on Nov 5, 1955!

Marsha, you seem to care so much about the library, and so little about the Hill Valley ClockTower! Why Marsha, are you in favor of not supporting the reconstruction. Who is funding you, what are you hiding Marsha!

  • MonroeOrange

Marsha, what is your real name..i would never post under an alias!

It is extremely disturbing that poets Gioseffi and Mercado were completely unaware of Debora Hallen stance on the destruction of the Brooklyn Heights Library, as well of her undying devotion, and support for real estate developers bent on taking over the BH library land to develop luxury high rise condos, while designating the library to a dark gloomy basement. Deborah Hallen deliberately kept her support to destroy the Brooklyn Heights Library from the poets, and collected funds to do what? Who knows? Obviously there is a lack of transparency on the part of the BH “Library Friends”. “The group” should be well aware that when citizens are excluded from participating in the process of deciding what goes on in their communities, including what type of development greedy developers are proposing, people are going to react negatively, and not even the best poetry reading, or the best poets in the world can take the place of community involvement. Deborah Hallen has lost credibility in Brooklyn Heights, and it is time that Ms. Hallen and her “group” get on the right side of the community or get out of the way. Nidia Birenbaum
