Reader: What’s Up With These Crazy Cabbies?

Since TLC commish David Yassky lives in Brooklyn Heights, we figured that this taxi etiquette question might reach the man himself.

A female reader asks –

Homer, the other night a cabbie dropping me off at home in Brooklyn Heights asked me if he could come into my house and use my bathroom. I, of course, said no. It’s a weird request and I don’t want a stranger in my home. What is even more odd is that this is not the first time a cabbie has asked me to do this. Anyone else have this happen to them?

This is one problem that the TLC has turned a blind eye to. Just about everyone has a toilet where they work. Taxi drivers do not. It’s next to impossible to find a toilet when we are desperate along with a legal parking spot. Need I say more.

  • Joe A

    It’s the TLC’s fault?

  • Abie

I’m not saying it’s the TLC fault. All, I’m trying to say is they are not
willing to help. The problem exists and certainly there are things that can be
done. The lack of facilities and adequate parking for taxi drivers all over the
city can be addressed. There have been several ideas floated over the years. But
never is there any real action taken.

So, Joe, I ask you to think of the last time you were desperate to use a toilet in NYC while driving a vehicle, if you do drive. Taxi drivers go through this dilemma often. The next time a taxi doesn’t stop for you, perhaps now you will know why!

Before “Sylvester” says this — why doesn’t Citibank sponsor CitiTinkle kiosks all over the city? They have them in Paris!

  • Joe A

The DOT has 55 Taxi Relief Stands scattered through the city where can driver’s can park for up to an hour with no charge to take care of personal necessities. I’m not sure what else the city is expected to do?

Yes and there are ususlly police or other vehicles parked in them…Joe, I appreciate your very sympothetic point of view..If you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem. Don’t worry, I won’t ask to use your toilet!

  • Abie

Now there is a good idea I haven’t heard yet.

  • Joe A

Bring an empty bottle to work. Not my problem.

  • Abie

That’s Cute! But not the real solution. It certainly shows your prejudice toward people you believe are below you. Thanks for nothing!

  • Joe A

Don’t be a moron. I actually drove a cab for a few years in my life. Sorry if I don’t think it is the biggest problem in the world.

  • Abie

Ok, Thanks. Now I have some respect for you. I hope this blog in some way can start a debate that will be benificial.
