Last Minute Weekend Suggestions

Those of you who, like me, are fans of Peter Schickele (photo), who have delighted in his compositions (as P.D.Q. Bach) Concerto for Horn and Hardart, Iphegenia in Brooklyn, and Oedipus Tex, will be delighted to know that his Piano Trio will be part of the program for a “Masterworks” concert at Bargemusic on Saturday evening, starting at 8:00. Also on the program are works by Turina and Shostakovich; all will be performed by the Alaria Trio. There will also be Masterworks concerts on Friday evening at 8:00, featuring works by Medtner, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, and Prokofiev, played on piano by Olga Vinokur, and on Sunday afternoon at 2:00, with works by Brahms, C. Franck, Bach/Kreisler, Kreisler, de Falla/Kreisler, and Sarasate, performed by Mark Peskanov on violin and Doris Stevenson on piano. There will also be a free, family oriented “Music in Motion” concert Saturday afternoon at 3:00 (doors open at 2:30; first come, first seated). More details are here.

Brooklyn Heights Cinema, 70 Henry Street (corner of Orange) will be showing Quartet and Silver Linings Playbook. Showtimes are here.

Don’t forget the “stuff-a-sack” sale at Plymouth Church’s Underground Thrift Shop this Sunday from 12:30-4:00 p.m. (also the following Sunday).

One of the first LPs ever given me was “An Evening with P.D.Q. Bach”, comprising his “Concerto for Horn & Hardart”, the “Cantata: Iphegenia in Brooklyn”, and several other atrocities.

I encourage everyone to purchase it for their impressionable youngsters.
