Open Thread Wednesday: January 23, 2013

Happy Open Thread Wednesday for January 23, 2013. Interesting numbers, given that temps this week are in the neighborhood of 13 to 23 degrees or so, eh? So what’s making you feel hot, cold, bothered and blithe? Comment away, BHB minions! (Photo/Joralemon & Court streets: CT)

I’ll open on a positive note: where is the best place (locally) to adopt a pet? I am particularly interested in a small to medium sized dog, hopefully a rescue pup.

  • Jim

@ Knight: THANKS for starting us off on an upbeat note !!! the North Shore Animal League is a top notch organization to adopt pups from, and they often have an adoption van in the neighborhood (I last saw them a few weekends ago on Court outside the theatre). for cats/kittens (and rabbits!!), i highly recommend Infinite Hope Adoption via Hope Vet Clinic on atlantic. happy adopting !!!

    What are “reactions”?

Knight: The Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition is based here in Brooklyn Heights and while their focus is cats, they deal with all kinds of animals. They’re on Facebook and Twitter, and their e-mail address is on their website.

Animal Care and Control, the city agency, also is always desperately looking to adopt animals. They too are on Facebook and Twitter, often posting photos of animals who need homes.

Knight: North Shore Animal League is a terrific place. The City Animal Care and Control on Linden Blvd is a terrible place – they have mostly pit bulls who were abandoned on the street. We got a dog (one of their few non-pit-bulls) from there a few years ago who was got very sick while housed there for a few days. Fortunately, we were able to nurse her back to health. They were shut down a year ago Christmas because of their unhealthy conditions.

On Jan 9th “In the Know” said the scaffold surrounding 25 Pierrepont Street would be taken down that week – it’s Jan 23rd and it’s still up. So much for In the Know. #still waiting.

OK, I’m going to try to post a link to Pete Wells’ review today of Krescendo, a new pizza place in Boerum Hill–just a kiss away.

He gave it two stars, and it looks most promising:

If the link doesn’t work–well the review is, of course, on the Times’ site.

want to question air rights on Hallmark and adjacent building re Archstone. New system a mystery. How to do it?

  • DIBS

Disqua is dropping posts that I’ve made here but not on the Hicks St house thread

  • BrooklynBugle

If enough users flag a comment it is put into moderation automatically. The entire reason we’re using this is to have a self moderated system.

  • DIBS

Well, all I did was post a link to deals on fur hats. Has the thread been overrun with PETA people?

  • GHB

Knight, I adopted from Bideawee. They’re at 410 E. 38th (betw. 1st Ave. & the FDR) Got a great dog from them!

  • BrooklynBugle

It picked you off as spam.

  • DIBS

    I’ve been called worse!!!

  • Teresa

AC&C definitely has its problems, but it also operates under conditions most shelters don’t–it has to take every animal brought there, and it’s underfunded. Ignoring it won’t make it go away, and its animals desperately need help. I thinking that writing it off will ultimately create a worse situation for animals.

Although it’s not local (sorry!), we adopted our dog from Larchmont Pet Rescue and it was such a great experience. They regularly rescue dogs from puppy mills in West Virginia and North Carolina and often have dogs of all ages and all sizes (our dog is 9 lbs, but there were also lab mixes listed). One thing we really loved about them is that the dogs they rescue stay with foster families before they’re adopted, so you have an idea if the dog is good with kids, other pets, etc. http://www.ny-petrescue.org

Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue is another good local rescue group – my wife and I did not ultimately get our dog from here, but they do great work in Brooklyn and have dogs of all sizes: http://www.badassbrooklynanimalrescue.com/

FYI we are NOT Brownstoner we are BrownstoneCorpLLC and not a real estate company in any way.

Does anyone know where I can get 2 cords of firewood delivered to my home FAST like this afternoon?
We are running low on wood here.
We LOVE a roaring fire each evening.

  • Gerry

@ DIBS – I had bought my wife a long fur coat to keep her warm and we were harassed by a anti-animal fur activist outside of Harry Winston Jewelers in Manhattan.
The activist asked us if we knew how many animals had been killed to make that coat – I told her that I didnt care and she became even more rude.
Your joke about NSAL cats gave me a great idea – I want to get my wife a fur hat for Valentines Day.

Hey Homer, what happened to all the Gerry posts, Did you banish him forever? Gotta admit, hate him or not, he was kind of entertaining…

Has anyone else had a bad experience with Plaza Cleaners losing their clothing recently? Advice?

  • Andrew Porter

I wonder if the week of really cold weather we’re going through will be enough to kill off a lot of bad insects that have been surviving the usually mild winters we’ve experienced in the last decade? Anyone here know, or are all the botanical experts in BH hibernating?

  • Andrew Porter

Posted twice, and thus *really* SPAM!

  • BrooklynBugle

If enough people “flag as inappropriate” (the upside down triangle in the upper right corner of each comment) comments will be moderated. The people, in this case have spoken. Which, again, is the whole purpose of this system.

  • martinlbrooklyn

Trying again. What about the air rights over the two low buildings next to the Archstone monster which, if I remember correctly, was enabled to go extra high by purchasing the air rights over the two low buildings. Anyone know the story??

  • GHB

So, with this new Disqus thing, we can censor and edit what others are posting? I like being able to edit mistakes I may have already made, but I don’t think we should be able to block Gerry’s (always entertaining) ramblings and ridiculous boasts. Anybody else agree?
