Open Thread Wednesday: November 14, 2012

Here on the 318th day of 2012, there are but 47 days remaining until the end of the year. That means BHB will offer only six more Open Thread Wednesdays before the turning of the calendar. You better hurry, huh? What’s on your mind? Comment away! (Photo: CT/red velvet cake at Lassen & Hennigs)

    What I’m doing.

  • Wiley E.

Oh, oh. 311 says Alternate Side of the Street Parking rules are back in effect today.

  • Scrambler

They need to pick up recycling ASAP. Our streets are disgusting.

  • Curmudgeon

Good that alternate side parking is back. Our streets need to be cleaned – and soon!

  • lcd

Any news about progress on the R train??

  • GHB

Oddly enough, I haven’t seen a single rat in the neighborhood since the hurricane hit. And that’s with all the additional garbage piled up! Go figure…

  • CJG

Anyone looking for an apartment? I have one bedroom available December 15th. See the craigslist ad for more information

    http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/abo/3397686697.html

There is an open house this weekend from 12-2pm. Please email me via the craigslist ad if you’re interested or want more information.

    Thanks!

  • ColumbiaHeightster

Can anyone recommend a dentist in the area please?

  • Anna B

Anyone recommend their cleaners/cleaning service? Preferably someone who uses eco-friendly products.

  • TMS

Anyone know the status of the 2 building proposed for Pier 1, right in direct line of a flood zone? Are they still building them and if so WHY? SHOULD they still be building them? Shouldn’t they be required to build a school to accommodate all the new kids in the area? This is what is on my mind!

  • north heights res

Folks complaining about garbage/recycling: have you seen the streets in other parts of the city? Why is not OK to keep your recycling in your house for a few weeks so that other parts of the city can have much-needed sanitation services?

Complaining about recycling and street cleaning seems to lack, shall we say, some serious perspective from people who have been incredibly fortunate.

  • Wrennie

GHB, I highly suspect that a lot of rats drowned during the hurricane. Yuck.

I’m also looking for a dentist recommendation…preferably one who takes dental insurance.

  • Bornhere

For dental care, consider the Moshman practice on Remsen between Hicks and Henry. I’ve been with them for decades. Stanley is really good, if somewhat socially inept, but he’s careful, thoughtful, smart, and committed to clarity. And one doesn’t really need snappy conversation from a dentist, anyway.

  • Miss Montague

Dr Wong on court street is a wonderful dentist!

@northheightsres I couldn’t agree with you more. People have their entire homes on the curb in hard hit areas nearby. The sanitation department has been extremely overloaded. Having some recycling and garbage on the street is a small price to pay for our good fortune.

  • Miss Montague

Also, @GHB there are rats all over the place. I saw 3 on the promenade yesterday in the early evening.

  • North heights res

Oops, mistakenly posted this on the wrong thread.

Can anyone recommend a decent, relatively quick place to get something to eat near the Barclays Center?

Assuming everything around there will be heaving in the hour or so before a concert, yes?

  • Gerry

Is Dr. Klein still a dentist on Pierrepont Street or has he retired?

  • THERESA

HAVING BEEN TO ROCKAWAY SINCE THE DISASTER I CAN ONLY SAY THE SANITATION DEPT. IS DOING A TERRIFIC JOB. COME DOWN THE STREETS A FEW TIMES A DAY TAKE THE MESSES AWAY & THERE IS ALWAYS MORE. CAME ALONG HENRY ST. THIS MORNING OUR SANITATIONGUYS WERE DOING A GREAT JOB GETTING THE STREETS CLEANED UP IT WOULD BE NICE IF THEY COULD GET SOME THANKS FOR ALL THEIR PRODUCTIVE WORK

  • Gerry

I hear that the One Brooklyn Bridge Park condo is still a disaster from the flood, storm so glad we did not move into that place!

  • Wiley E.

    Can Rats swim?

  • harumph

Dr. Moshman is socially inept but a good dentist, I like his partner though. One Brooklyn Bridge is totally on the mend. As of Monday they had water (and hot water) and electricity – and today or tomorrow they are due to get heat. All in all, not so bad. Would love an update on the R train. I miss it sorely!

  • Park Lover

@gerry — sorry to disappoint you, but OBBP isn’t a “disaster”. Waiting for heat, but water is back (and the power never went out). OBBP was lots more fortunate than other folks along Zones A & B.

  • Melissa

For apt cleaning, I have used Aida Soriano 347-235-7641. She is very familiar with eco friendly products.

  • GHB

Gerry, if you moved to One Brooklyn Bridge Park, we’d miss your constant mentions of Montague Terrace!

  • Melissa

For a quick and good meal near the Barclay’s center, try Purbird, http://bklyndesign.com/purbird/

  • AmyinBH

Rats can swim. Warning: don’t read this while eating.

I have the best dentist. Imagine Smile Design Phone 212-375-1740. I got a life long dental (gum) problem solved because they saw what was causing it and fixed it. Oh yeah, and the insurance company tried not to pay so Dr. Geen fought with the insurance company and won. It’s a husband and wife practice. I see Dr. Natasha Geen. It’s a quick subway ride to the city but worth it. Recommended without reservation.

  • Heighster

I had issues with Moshman. Their equipment is antiquated as are his skills. I went to a new dentist to undo some bad work I had done by Moshman. The hygienists, though they are very nice, do a lousy job. They spent about 15 minutes on my teeth. New place spends about 45.

Can’t believe anyone is complaining about the recycling. We should consider ourselves lucky that that is the only inconvenience we experienced from the hurricane. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

  • SPM

Something positive: I’ve been ordering from Table 87 pizza and they are fabulous! The pizza is delicious, delivered hot and with a very courteous “please, enjoy it” from their delivery people. Toppings are home made and the quality surpasses any I’ve had elsewhere and certainly the mediocre Della Rocco’s. They have tables to eat in, very casual and just all-in-all a great addition to the ‘hood. Highly recommend.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

@SPM, why do you feel the need to criticize Della Rocco’s? You know that it’s okay to say nice things about someone (in this case, Table 87) without bashing someone else, right?
