BHB Reader Claims: Car Vandals Hit Remsen Street

And we thought it was just us. A few weeks ago some thug stole our hubcaps from our car parked on Columbia Heights. Add that to the random cars we’ve seen on blocks around the area and this reader dispatch to what appears to be a War on Cars in Brooklyn Heights.:

Remsen Street tires slashed! My girlfriend moved my car today, only to find it had a slashed tire. She then walked up and down the block (near the corner of Remsen and Hicks) and found that 4-5 other cars had slashed tires. Unbelievable!

Sounds like we are gong back in time. Don’t be surprised if you see a car on 4 milk crates, missing all wheels. Welcome to Brooklyn!

  • Squiggy

One of our tires was also slashed. The car was parked on Hicks outside the new Pizza restaurant since Friday.

  • Gerry

I leave my car on Montague Terrace 24/7 near the doorman at Two Montague Terrace and it has not been vandalized.

  • Lawandorder

Let’s hope these vandals are caught and shot.

  • bornhere

And a car parked on Joralemon at Henry (right at the corner near The Fish Pond) was broken into in the early hours of Sunday morning.

  • jennyrose

Our car was broken into on Hicks near Clark. The glove compartment was completely emptied, but they didn’t take anything. There wasn’t anything in there of interest, they just made a mess. Our hubcaps aren’t desirable, I guess.

  • Hole Truth

84th precinct asleep at the wheel.

  • HenryLoL

The 84th doesnt care about a few slashed tires or anything else that they view as a mere nat in the ear in the Heights… They are spending their time dealing with murder, rape, drug dealers and gangs over at the Farragout and Gowanus Houses. I dont blame them distributing resources appropriately, but we do need some more beat cops walking the streets. Even just 10 years ago it seemed like there were always friendly cops walking around.

  • Willowtowncop

In Red Hook I’ve seen cars with 4 boots on to protect their rims.

  • Gerry

@ jennyrose – Hubcaps went the way of the GMC Gremlin now cars have rims some betetr than others.

Before Mayor Rudy Gulianni one could not leave a car on Montague Street for an hour much less over-night he did a remarkable job cleaning up crime in NYC now I leave a high end SUV on the street all the time since Love Lane garage closed.

And Mayor Bloomberg held up the remarkable job that had been done by Rudy G – one for the GOP these are examples of 2 politicans who actually did something that they said they would do.

  • Hicks St Guy

@Gerry, it was under Dinkins that the SafeStreetsw SafeCity law was passed to sell bonds and hire a gazillion new cops. Bill Bratton implemented it until he got too much credit and was fired by the creep Guiliani, who would have been run out of town if it weren’t for 9/11. Please don’t bring up that disgrace to NY.

  • Gerry

@ Hicks St Guy – NEVER was crime at a higher point than under David Dinkins.

Like it or not it was Rudy G who cleaned up New York City and Michael Bloomberg who maintained that.

  • Hicks St Guy

@Gerry, you remind me of the Mark Twain quote: there are lies, there a damn lies, and there are statistics.” get a job with Fox News.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

^ Oh please, you two. No one who comes to the BHB for community information is interested in your bickering.

  • Teddy

In June, a guy who lived across the street from me came home one day to find his van missing. A few weeks later it showed up in Crown Heights damaged. After he repaired it he moved from Brooklyn.

  • MonroeOrange

ColumbiaHeighster…. I’m interested in Gerry and Hick St Guy battling it out on the blog…. Gerry, Gerry, Gerry!

  • Willowtowncop

I agree 100% with Hicks St Guy on this one. Dinkins hired the cops that cleaned up the City under Bratton – the effects weren’t felt until that creep was in office and took all the undeserved credit. He also screwed all the cops that he pretended he was responsible for out of raises year after year during a time when the City was raking in money hand over fist.

  • Mr. Crusty

Ditto Willowtowncop, Guiliani and his felon Police Commisioner pal Bernie Kerik are both disgraces to NY.

The book and movie “Freakonomics” postulates the Roe v Wade decision and subsequent rise in abortions post 1973, was mainly responsible for the nationwide drop in crime. Basically, abortion significantly decreased the number of people born unwanted, into broken homes. Such people are Statistically much more likely to become criminals. So at 18 years (the average age criminals become active) after RvW crime starts to drop… simply because there are now less people with the propensity to commit crimes.

  • HenryLoL

LOL. You dont know what corruption is unless you had an eye into the Dinkins administration. Cant say any more. He was a fraction away from reeking total devistation on this city. Good Rid. You may not like Bloomberg and Rudy, but just watch how quickly we will go back to hell after a two-term ultra liberal comes back.

  • Hicks St Guy

@HenryL, c’mon, and Ed Koch was totally clean? remember Donald Manes, Stanley Friedman? I was not supporting the incompetent Dinkins, just pointing out the truth about the reduction in crime.

  • David on Middagh

EE, don’t forget our high incarceration rate. The private prison industry, the wacky laws and harsh enforcement… I call it “retroactive abortion”. What an industry!
