March 21 is World Puppetry Day! It’s also the 50th birthday of New Yorker Matthew Broderick, who won a Tony Award for 1983’s “Brighton Beach Memoiors,” set in Brooklyn in 1937.

Now that we have that straight… What’s on your mind? Fire away! (Photo: Chuck Taylor)

You know, once we start throwing feces, we’re no better than chimpanzees!

  • Hicks St Guy

@MO & J-man, vigilantism? so knee-jerk ridiculousness. see how you feel when you step in the stuff.

  • Elmer Fudd

If you have a dog, don’t be a Cheeta by not picking up.

Thanks for the DMV reviews. The one on Staten Island gave me the worst photo to date. I am afraid to go back. I had no idea there was one in lower manhattan. I’ll have to book a day off and check it out.

And, thanks for the poop posts! I laughed so hard I started to cry. Really needed that this stressful morning.

Does anyone here remember the brutal murder at Best Cleaners, in 1994? Tried to post about it here yesterday, three times, but my post was refused. Dunno why.

  • David on Middagh

    GHB,

    Throw feces, not bombs~!

  • cat

My post was also refused. When I tried to re-post, it said “you’ve already said that.”! Oh, well. I thought it might show up later, but it didn’t.

  • Neil

Also having trouble getting post to stick, as well as getting same message as respondent cat

  • Neil

Above, short message sticks, but not longer one. Capacity issue?

  • David on Middagh

    Neil, cat,

I think your posts triggered the spam filters. Who knows what causes false positives. The longer the message, the more words or links that might make the filter suspicious. I’ve had messages “detained”, so I feel your pain.

  • Neil

David–Well, this is ridiculous! I just replied, including a link to our earlier BHB exchange, and it, too failed.

  • Knight

You laugh at the idea of throwing feces, but I was in a Chase ATM lobby on Water Street & Maiden Lane at lunchtime last Thursday when someone did just that … literally … a bucket full. I don’t know what their beef with Chase was, but they really made their mark on the branch.

Gosh, there’re so many to choose from!

I remember the murder quite well, because I saw the victim at the cleaners within a month or so before it happened. She was an attractive young woman with red hair, and when the person who was taking her clothes to be cleaned asked her name, she said “Auerbach: a-u-e-r-b-a-c-h.” I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying, “Ah, Red Auerbach.” I’m sure she’d heard it a hundred times. She was shot by her ex-boyfriend, who knew she would be going to the cleaners at a certain time and waited for her across the street. He later went to the north end of the Promenade and shot himself in the head.

@AmyinBH, I’m weighing in a bit late here, but the DMV office on Greenwich Street in Manhattan is undoubtedly the most efficient location in NYC.

  • She’s Crafty

Good to know re: Greenwich St. DMV location. Sometimes I go upstate just so I don’t have to deal, but it’s a pain.

Also, I’m not sure it’s really vigilantism to take pix of someone who first let’s their dog sh*t on the sidewalk, doesn’t pick it up, and then chains the dog to a tree while she eats (and presumably is not going to get up to clean up after the dog if it sh*ts again while she is eating).

A friend found a note on her door step in cobble hill saying ” I want to buy your house, I will pay cash” and gave a phone number. I’m ready for the ridicule. but is this a matter that should be brought to the police ? She also noticed that another note was near her neighbor’s house… she is scared to call the number. any advice? It’s just a bit weird.

  • David on Middagh

It is weird, but it sounds like just the sort of thing a clueless, headstrong person could do. I wouldn’t call the police unless there is a good reason for suspecting fraud, or unless there is a pattern of harassment of one person. I might call the number and explain that we don’t make offers this way; it’s very upsetting to the homeowner.

  • WillowtownCop

@ Claude – you seem to be the person to ask. I’ve heard rumors of a horrific home invasion murder on Columbia Place years ago, but every time I hear it, the address and the story are different. 20 – 30 years ago? Further back than the PD computers – I’ve tried to look it up.

Willowbubb, Tell your friend to just ignore it, the cops won’t do anything unless a crime has been committed, which has not. I wouldn’t call as DoM suggested as they would have your friends phone number.

  • willowbubb

thank you david and arch. I will let her know. Also as someone who babysits I wanted to attach a link for babysitters, mothers, father etc to be vigilant of a man who approached two kids yesterday at pierpont playground

willowtown cop: all I could find on a quick web search was this: http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/23823
It was before my time in the Heights, but Arch has memories of it.

My web search also turned up this piece by erstwhile BHB contributor Elon Green, telling of some grisly goings on in the neighborhood back in the 19th century: http://www.theawl.com/2011/08/murder-suicide-and-mayhem-in-brooklyn-heights-yes-brooklyn-heights

“we don’t make offers this way”

Who’s the royal we? Maybe the cash part is suspicious, and you didn’t give any info on whether this particular note looked otherwise credible, but it’s not uncommon for people to leave messages like that for owners. If only to let the owner know that, should he/she ever be interested in selling, there’s an interested party out there.

  • Knight

@willowbub: I’ve seen that happen before, though in a very different sales market. It could just be that the person who left the note is looking to move into the neighborhood without paying a realtor’s commission and wants to know if anything is about to become available that has not yet been committed to a specific realtor. The “cash” part isn’t all that suspicious, either, if they already own a house on which their mortgage is paid off.

  • willowbubb

    okay thanks guys.

  • weegee

I once found an unsigned note on the door of my car (not in the Heights) with someone’s cell phone number, cordially requesting a phone call, as they wanted to “ask me a question.” I ignored it.

  • willowbubb

weegee- was it a 646 number?

  • weegee

It may have been…don’t remember it, though, and the note is long thrown away. Something to the effect of “Hi! Can you call me at ###, have a question to ask.” Seemed like a rogue phone phishing thing, or something. Or someone who wanted to know how to get press plates. Either way, I wasn’t interested in finding out.

I see Brownstoner is reporting that an Irish pub will move into the former La Traviata space. I like the idea – Montague could use a decent bar.
