BHB Readers Endorse Daniel Squadron

The readers of Brooklyn Heights Blog have spoken – loudly – about their pick in this Tuesday’s  25th State Senate District Democratic primary.

In a survey conducted over the last week of persons who identified themselves as registered Democrats in the 25th who plan to vote in the September 9th primary, 79% chose challenger Daniel Squadron over incumbent Sen. Martin Connor’s 20.8%.

We at BHB are not endorsing a candidate, rather we are reporting on the decision made by our readers.

Well, change my vote. I thought I was a Squadron supporter until I went to the debate last night and they guy couldn’t answer anything with specifics. I agree Connor over reacted (my ears..are still ringing) but the details with which he was able to discuss topics and answer the moderators questions blew Squadron out of the water. All Squadron could do was talk about his 11 points, but provided no detail. “Question: top 2 issues? Answer: there’s really 4, but I’m not gonna tell you anything, just the good fuzzy things we want to hear with no substance”.
I’m all for change, but common, riding Obama’s coattails only gets you so far, you have to have some substance!!!

I am a Republican and I am going to vote for this guy. Throw out the old and bring in the new. Politics should be a public service not a career like most of these folks treat it on both sides of the aisle.

  • Sasha

Connor comes off as hateful and obnoxious (his antics sort of reminded me of the rancor spewed by Giuliani and Palin last night).

I am excited to vote for Squadron. I think he will bring an enthusiasm and sharpness that will benefit this neighborhood for a long time, and I think he has a great future in politics.

I attended the debate. Connor had a snide comment, unfair innuendo or ad hominem attack in almost every answer, often dispensed in an angry, bellicose voice. The moderator even scolded Connor for his personal attacks. Squadron responded calmly, with a dignity and fearlessness that Connor would do well to learn from. He never once descended to the gutter Connor wallowed in.

  • cormac

I don’t why Connor is targeting Squadron’s money that he inherited from his dead father? What is wrong with using the money that his father left him to fund his campaign?

  • hoppy

Tom Robbins had a fairly critical piece about Squadron in this week’s V.V.

Just passing on the link for everyone’s info…not taking a position, so don’t yell at me;)

As long as we are posting things
    http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newyork/ny-bc-ny–campaignspending0903sep03,0,7068885.story

Who is supposed to be the rich one? I’d say the one that can give their campaign $35,000.
This whole thing is like McCain calling Obama elitist. Get real Connor spin machine.

  • Andrew Porter

Remember, if Squadron were in the RAF he could eventually work his way up to Squadron Leader….

I’m still not sure who I’m voting for. Will likely decide next week…

  • Palindrome

cormac — half the posts “defending” Squadron are attacks on the BHA’s old Anglo-Dutch for endorsing Connor (and something something condos). It’s not unreasonable to expect that in a Democratic primary the rich candidate should have to show that he’s paid his dues. I’m not sure working for someone clearly on the right wing of the Democratic party on economic and foreign policy issues for a number of years is it.

Hoppy, thanks for the link. That was an informative piece.

I think that your readers should know that I received an post card in the mail from the Lambda Independent Democrats and Lambda Independent Democrats is supporting Connor.

Personally as a person who identifies as a LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans-sexual) I will vote in accordance with how the Lambda Independent Democrats instruct me to vote.

Obviously this fight is somewhat about a fight against the old Anglo/Dutch power elite that has controlled this neighborhood–and who form policies regarding real estate development, etc.

But the other part of this fight I believe is that I think that there is obviously been a feud between Chuck Schummer and Connor.

Connor said something or did something that really got under the skin of Schummer.

Schummer decided to pull the weight of the establishment Democratic machine behind one of “his kids” to bring down Connor.

It is a win-win for Schummer if he is successful in this gamble and Chuck Schummer is a smart man so he is likely to get his way in the primary.

But I won’t let Chuck Shummer tell me how to vote.

I will follow the advise of an independent, progressive, pro-gay group like Lambda Independent Democrats, thank you very much.

Connor backed geraldine ferraro over schumer back in the day. hence the feud. go ahead be a lemming.

  • heightsdiho

Was on Henry St moments a few minutes ago. Angry furtive blond dude is ripping down all of the Squadron signs faster than they can put them up – just between Clark and Cranberry.

  • Tina

Doesn’t it bother any of you that Republican mayor Michael Bloomberg has endorsed Squadron? Rich white guys who don’t give a damn about ordinary people don’t exactly strike me as Progressive. And yes, I know that Bloomberg has declared himself “Independent”–that’s a laugh. How about Squadron?

  • stan

in a dstrict full of rich people whu reelect a man who hates the rich?

To Squadron, Schumer, and all you pissant yuppies who’ve flooded the neighborhood and walk around with “Brooklyn” sweatshirts sipping lattes…

Went to see the captain, strangest I could find,
Laid my proposition down, laid it on the line.
I wont slave for beggars pay, likewise gold and jewels,
But I would slave to learn the way to sink your ship of fools.

Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.

Saw your first ship sink and drown, from rockin of the boat,
And all that could not sink or swim was just left there to float.
I wont leave you drifting down, but woh it makes me wild,
With thirty years upon my head to have you call me child.

Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.

The bottles stand as empty, as they were filled before.
Time there was and plenty, but from that cup no more.
Though I could not caution all, I still might warn a few:
Dont lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools.
To Squadron, Schumer, and all you pissant yuppies who walk around wearing “brooklyn” sweatshirts and sipping lattes…

Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought, when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.

It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.
