Modifications to 72 Poplar on CB2 Executive Committee Agenda Tomorrow Evening

The plans of the development company that bought 72 Poplar Street, the former NYPD building (see photo), will be considered at the meeting of the Executive Committee of Community Board 2 tomorrow (Monday, January 23) evening, starting at 6:00, at the Library Learning Center, room 515, of Long Island University, at DeKalb and Hudson Avenues.

According to the developer, as quoted by C.B.2:

Application is to extend the existing fourth floor, construct a new fifth floor addition, set back the rear wall by five feet to achieve legal light and air requirements, construct new rear façade, install new accessible ramp at Poplar Street entrance, create new window and door openings at east and west facades, and construct a one-story rooftop addition on adjacent garage.

The CB2 Land Use Committee recommended that the planned addition on the garage building be moved forward to line up with the Poplar Street facade.

It will be good to see this fine old building repaired, cleaned, and given a new lease on life.

I’ve been told by a good source that most of the committee meetings on the building were in secret. They want to build a big penthouse on the roof after Landmarks had said no to the (I believe) last owner. The BHA rolled over dead this time. The structure planned is even larger than the one Landmarks would not consider.

Does anyone know why this was allowed to happen after landmarks would not consider a large structure on the roof?
