@Lorax, “raised in a responsible manner”. this thread today is completely hilarious, thanks you, Lorax & TiLo.

Scaffolding incident at 11 Cranberry St. Two workers temporarily stranded, but brought back in safely through the windows.

  • Janeonorange

@TiLi, I have gotten trees from AdamParkeTrees in front of St. Ann’s for 4 years. They are ‘organic’ and last through the New Year. I love them.

Does anyone know any way to request additional signage in Cadman park that would direct tourists to the Brooklyn Bridge walkway? Even as simple as the signage that exists on the streets for cyclists that shows “Bklyn Bridge (stairs)” and a picture of a bike. Could be the same thing with a pedestrian replacing the picture of the bike. I can’t tell you how many tourists I have to lead there on my near-daily walks across the park. I think people get confused when they reach the other side of the park (would technically be Cadman Plaza East) and they don’t know to turn left toward the stairs. It’s very confusing for people and could be cleared up with a simple sign or two. Come on, parks commission and/or DOT!

  • GHB

Amanda, they could post neon signs with arrows every 50 feet leading to the Brooklyn Bridge and people would still ask how to get there.

  • Knight

@David: read the sign in the window of Prominent on Henry Street. It says LGA $40.

  • David on Middagh

Publius, a robo call? Oh, no! I’m sympathetic to owners of lost pets, but that is going too far. Cathy, call off your robo dogs!

  • David on Middagh

Knight: Okay, I’ll believe you that a BH outfit is ripping off clueless walk-ins.

I am looking for a room to rent in BH for my father in law, he is here 13th Dec to 6th Jan, please email me if you have something available for any of that time. Thanks, mondayschild150@gmail.com

  • WillowtownCop

GHB is right. I’ve been standing on 42nd Street, watched a tourist walk up to the 41st Street sign and stare at it, then to the 42nd Street sign and stare at it, and then walk up to me and ask where 43rd Street is. The answer always is somewhere far enough away thay you won’t bother to come back to tell me either I was wrong or I lied to you.

  • JoJo

I use Future Group Car Service, they’re $30 to LGA and $40 to JFK, you’re all paying way too much if you’re spending $45 to go to LGA that’s absurd

  • Cathy

I’m glad that Find Toto works! Thanks for letting me know!

  • Sick of Smokey the Bear

We’ve got a pot smoking downstairs neighbor and are not sure what to do about it. We smell it all the time in our bedrooms, ours and our kids. I hate to be an old scrooge, and I certainly had my partying days, but those are long gone, and I really don’t want to live with it any more.

We are in a co-op and the board has told us to call the police next time we smell it. The board once went to him directly, but he had his lawyer of a father write a letter to the board to lay off claiming he doesn’t smoke pot.

Anyone out there have any info on this? Do the police really respond to a call like this, and if so, what can they actually do?

  • The Bear

While you say you don’t want to live with it anymore, how do you think he feels about listening to your kids running around and yelling?

& you can buy him a vaporiser and you wont smell anything.

  • resident

As a taxpayer in a city whose police ranks are woefully thin at the moment, I hope police wouldn’t respond to a complaint of marijuana scent.

The guy seems like a bit of a dick for his response, and he should take pains to try to minimize the affect on your apartment. But at the end of the day, you live in an apartment building. Rude neighbors that can directly affect your quality of life is part of the deal.

  • http://loureads.com Lou

I agree. Buy your neighbor a cheap vaporizer and the smell will go from stanky to practically zero.

  • Willow St. Neighbor

    Bear,
How can you assume that his kids are running around, yelling and creating a disturbance?
Sometimes I smell smoke in my bedroom which I assume comes from the young people downstairs. It’s really annoying as I quit smoking amost 30 years ago. If I had children who had to smell pot I would find out what legal action (if any) could be taken and I’d take it.

  • http://loureads.com Lou

Did you quit 30 years ago because your neighbor narc’d on you?

  • PuffPuffPass

If I ever reach the point where the smell of weed makes me consider calling the police, it’ll be a sure sign that I’m no longer meant for city life.

Sell your condo. Move to Westchester. The only grass you’ll have to deal with will be in your yard and this guy will be able to watch the Daily Show in peace without the Five-O knocking on his door.

  • The Bear

    Willow,
Just saying, we don’t know what steps either side is taking to prevent the odor. Closed windows? Vents in apt? Poorly constructed apts?
We all have issues with others, some voiced some not. It’s NYC apt living, and we all have to deal with issues we’d rather not.
What if it was just cigarette smoke? Cigar smoke?Garlic cooking every day? Someone with bad bowels? What to do then?

  • wrennie

I had a similar issue with the person directly below me, but I think he stopped smoking because he had a baby. It was strong enough to literally bake out my bathroom–it was like being at a Phish concert. In any case, I had spoken to my cop friend about it who told me that you can’t really do much through the cops. First, no one has to open their door to cops–they’d have to get a search warrant. Second, it’d have to be such a huge amount for it to be a truly punishable offense–enough to presumably be a dealer–which is probably not what your neighbors have. After hearing that, I just tried to ignore it. You’re more likely to aggravate your neighbor if you go to the cops than you are to actually end the problem. Good luck!

Thanks, everyone, for the thorough discussion on getting to LGA.

  • Sick of Smokey the Bear

The biggest concern is exposing my preteen, and he smokes cheap, skunk weed and it just smells bad. I don’t think this qualifies me for being ready for the burbs. I just don’t want to smell pot in my apartment.

If my kids were making too much noise, he could go to the board and complain about that and we haven’t heard a word (and they could inspect our floors to ensure they were covered 80% according to our house rules). That leads me to believe that we are not disturbing him. I understand what apartment living is all about. I have lived in one for 20 years. This is a quality of life issue and until the laws are changed, it is illegal. Like I said before I used to party with the best of them, but life changes and priorities shift and I am sick of it. So if there are any lawyers out there who have any real advise, please share. Thanks!

    Sick of Smokey,

Christmas is right around the corner. Why don’t you get your kids a couple of pogo sticks :)

Don’t know about commercial signs on buildings. I cut commercial notices down off lamp posts and the like, but leave up notices for stoop sales, lost animals and stuff (Beebop). But sigs on buildings? Yeah, I’ve seen those. Don’t know what the law is.

I have noticed big commercial signs posted on, for instance, a lamp post at CadPlaza West and Clark Street, which I tore down. And a year or so ago, someone put a big commercial sign up on a tree on Hicks Street, attached with wires. I went home, got a wire cutter. Problem solved. If you take Conduit to JFK, you’ll see dozens of these things. For that matter, signs visible from Interstate Highways (like the BQE) are also illegal, but tell that to the owners of the big signs (currently advertising the iPad) visible at the far north end of the Promenade.

Consider leaving a box of these Hello Neighbor Personal Air Freshener and Odor Neutralizer outside his apartment with a letter saying “Look, if you’re going to smoke your awful ditch weed please use these so you don’t wreck my apartment, too. Maybe explain the whole kid exposure, too. A former employer of mine used to use these in his office. It does mask the smell. Of course you can also go the toilet paper/dryer sheets method but these things come in different scents…

  • Willow St. Neighbor

    Lou,
I quit smoking 30 years ago and I am glad I did. I am in my 60’s. An old childhood friend just had a double lung transplant at the ripe old age of 63.
He had emphysema. I am so glad I quit!

  • WillowtownCop

The cops will come, probably an hour late because its not exactly high on the priority list, pretend to care about knocking on the door, and then leave. You can’t kick in a door to write a ticket, and no one would want to anyway. It is a complete and total waste of police time. Its something to take up with the coop board or a civil attorney, but even then you’ll have a hell of a time proving anything, and that it caused the value of your property any harm.

  • LeslieH

I heard someone frantically running around BH early this morning calling for his dog, who must have gotten off leash or out somehow. Anyone know if “Thriller” was found? (It was heartbreaking.)

  • PromGirl

Patty sells terrific Christmas trees on Montague Street. She and her family come down from Vermont every year with gorgeous trees. Great assortment if types and sizes. The 7+ feet sell out fast.
She is a lovely gal, and her prices are fair, about $12/ft.
For the person looking for “organic” “responsibly raised” Christmas trees – you made my day. That was a PC joke, right?
Don’t you realize that “Green” is the new Red? Only much more expensive than being an old fashioned Commie/Hippie.

  • bkheightsgal

I know it isn’t technically in bk heights, but does anyone know what is going with Tripoli restaurant on Atlantic. It seems to be closed.
