Why on earth is the Brooklyn Heights Cinema screening Jack and Jill?

  • Jorale-man

@hoppy I wondered the same thing. I hope it’s not a sign of a new direction for the theater. I realize they need to make money and times are tough, but I hope it’s not at the expense of the more serious fare that they’ve long been known for.

    Another beautiful photo. Wow.

  • Alanna

Having some issues with my landlord responding in a timely manner (as in AT ALL) in regards to the smell of oil burning off the oil burner in the basement of our building. I’m on the 2nd floor and it stinks. Perhaps this is not the forum (and I apologize if I am posting in wrong place) but do I have cause to phone 311 about this? Will they “do” anything? Thanks in advance for any response.

Alanna, yes call 311 immediately it could be a partially blocked chimney which could be serious.

  • Willow St. Neighbor

    Alanna,
Sounds like toxic fumes to me. I would definitely report it.

  • Monty

This weekend is the Danish Christmas Fair. A bit of a change from previous years in that they are doing Saturday and Sunday afternoons and doing the sandwiches at Plymouth Church. The information in English is at the bottom of the page.

  • Knight

Alanna, the big difference between 311 and 911 is that you don’t need “cause” to call 311. They’re an information line and should direct you to the proper city agency.

  • AEB

    Great photo, Mrs. Fink!

@Alanna- I concur with the advice given by my neighbors here, but I would also suggest that you inform your landlord that you will be withholding a reasonable amount of rent to compensate you for your troubles- that always gets results for me…

  • Elmer Fudd

Alanna. Call 311. They will send an inspector – soon. Is there anyone in your building who is at home during the day? They will need to give the inspector access to the building. You could also consider calling the EPA (or ask the 311 operator if you should call the fire department) and report the condition. 311 is pretty quick to respond to health emergencies.

Be careful about withholding rent… there’s a legal way to do it, something about putting it in escrow and sending everything to landlord requesting signatures. Keep records.

  • Uhhh

Did the Montreal Bagel shop on Atlantic already shut down? Walking by this morning I noticed that it was empty(ier than usual) and the terrible graphics that they added were down.

  • Willow St. Neighbor

    Uhhh,
I would not be surprised if they closed down. I stopped by twice at about 9AM and wanted to buy their oat bran bagels. They had none. They said they weren’t ready yet. So, I purchased a few other bagels but when I got them home some of them were stale.
The second time I tried to buy oat bran bagels and was told that they were not ready yet, I remarked “it’s 9AM – they should be ready.
    I never went back.
It’s unfortunate because the bagels are delicious when they are fresh out of the oven.

Where was everyone tonight? Some of your cobloggers were at Vineapple and many more said they would be there..it was fun. You should attend for future get togethers.

  • Teresa

I tried that bagel place once – asked for a toasted bagel, and I was told they didn’t have a toaster. When I looked at the counterperson quizzically, she said that the bagels were hot and fresh and didn’t mean to be toasted. I smiled politely and walked out. That was that.

RE: Bklyn Hts Cinema and Jack & Jill. We had Rum Diary, which bombed. The only other film we could get on short notice was Jack & Jill. I held my nose and agreed to play it for 2 weeks until we could get a real movie. It will be gone by next Wednesday. I promise you, it is not a new direction, just a brief embarrassment.

  • WillowtownCop

It was nice to meet everyone at the Vineapple happy hour tonight – I hope we do it again soon.

  • Jorale-man

@Kenn- it’s nice to hear your response. No worries – keep up the great work there!

  • Heightsman

@kenn – I too was really appreciative of your response. Honesty is refreshing and hopefully rewarded. Says a lot about character.

Has anyone noticed helicopter in the air above the neighborhood at a standstill?

  • Western Brooklyn

    bkheightsgal:

Yes, helicopters & noise all morning! I think it may have something to do with the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations set for later today?

  • GHB

Kenn, appreciate the response! Is J & J at least making money for the cinema? What else can we expect this fall? Any chance you’ll get Le Havre?

  • bkheightsgal

western: that’s what I was thinking.
also noticed it yesterday. it is very noisy.
and I am happy I dont have to be in the borough hall subway station this afternoon for the OWS takeover.

  • bkheightsgal
  • AmyinBH

Does anyone else feel like the only people being inconvenienced by the OWS protests are the 99%? And, that all the extra police are wasting the tax dollars of the 99% since the rich don’t pay their fair share?

  • kenn Lowy

@BHC We’re working on showing a bunch of films. I hate to mention them because I never know if we’ll get them or not. Melancholia is one of them. la Havre is a possibility also the Artist which is a fantastic silent film coming out at the end of the year.

  • AEB

AmyinBH: to answer your question: no. At least. not me.

  • GHB

Thanks Kenn… Lars Von Trier can bite it, but Le Havre and The Artist both intrigue me.

  • harumph

AmyinBH – my thoughts exactly! Love that at one point they were going to head into the subway and do there thing there….not a lot of the 1% use the subway…they’ll get a lot of press though.
