Wild in the (Brooklyn Heights) Streets

Yes, folks it’s not shocking that there are freaks, misfits and malcontents out on the streets of New York City. One BHB reader writes us to warn of those lurking right here in Brooklyn Heights:

I live on Columbia Pl. On the way home [Friday] evening (morning) about 2:15am my friend and I were assaulted on State St between Henry and Hicks. We successfully fought him off. White Male 18-25yrs 5′ 8-10″. He kept shouting “you think you’re funny” until we got the upper hand when he started repeating “we’re friends! we’re friends!” he ran away north on Hicks. We did not call the police as we were unharmed.

    Use Common Sense, people.

‘You think you’re funny…. But we are friends….’ Ha, Ha.

Carry a blade, or pepper spray when you are out at 3 AM alone. Or bring a ‘friend’ with you. Do the math. 2 is bigger than 1.

@Western Brooklyn- well, you’ll be glad to know that I don’t have a “blame-the-victim” philosophy. And, excuse YOU, but you write something in quotation marks that I NEVER said. Don’t ever do that to anyone- use quotation marks properly please.

What did you make of my analogy about walking in front of a speeding car when you have the right-of-way? Is it blaming the victim when they deliberately put themselves in harm’s way? Are they still a victim when they do that?

And I should point out that when you say “Crime happens 24/7″, that doesn’t go to my point that MOST crimes happen in deserted areas in the middle of the night.

When a man with an email account ventures out onto the Internet, just himself and his words, promenading seven-hundred and thirty of his little darlings for everyone to see, his shouting favorites bedecked all in caps, one might wonder if he who is pontificating upon a thread had the common sense to lock his account behind him.

  • Western Brooklyn

Did it ever occur to you that many people do not work 9-5??? E.g., restaurant/bar workers, doormen, doctors, nurses, MTA employees, etc. Our streets do not close down after 11:00 p.m., so don’t blame people for being out late! They deserve safe streets & police protection at all hours!

I merely used quotes to paraphrase & emphasize your nonsense.

  • Master Of Middagh

@Western Brooklyn- That’s my point. You’re getting mad at me, saying I’m blaming “people for being out late”, when I am totally not doing that. I’m sorry if you’re having trouble understanding that we are NOT in disagreement with each other. Now, if you wouldn’t mind actually addressing the question of people who willingly put themselves in dangerous situations, regardless of whether or not those situations SHOULD be dangerous?

And it isn’t nonsense for me for me to insist that you not presume to misquote me- especially because you got my ideas wrong!

@David On Middagh- What did you mean by that? Was that addressed to me? I would think twice before insulting me, because I actually believe that you and I are friends who live in the same building…

  • Knight

@David … “lock his account behind him” … huh?

  • Master Of Middagh

@Knight- Exactly! Was that some sort of veiled threat? I find it hard to believe since I’d actually formed a good opinion of David before that remark…

  • David on Middagh

@MoM: I don’t believe we know each other offline. I’m not the only David on the street. You can keep being friendly to “your” David.

  • Master Of Middagh

@DavidOM- Oh, no! I’ve got no problem being friendly with you, regardless of any David you may be. I’m nothing if not affable!

I just didn’t appreciate your remark which was unrelated to my post and seemed to be a criticism of my contributing my thoughts in a forum where such discussions are encouraged. And it also looked like you threw a threat in there too- although I may have been mistaken (you have to admit, it was a little obscure).

  • Knight

I honestly didn’t read any veiled threat into David’s the remark. I just didn’t understand it. How does one “lock his account behind him”?

  • David on Middagh

    @Knight: It was a metaphor.

@MoM: You were dominating the thread, and beginning to shout. The hypocrisy of advising people not to go out at night, while you yourself (if you’re like most people, including me) are vulnerable to cyberattack/hijacking simply by dint of being connected to the Internet without being ultra-security conscious, was a bit much.

I wish I’d not let myself be sucked into this. IMO, more people should be walking the streets late at night. The more good guys out there, the less tolerable the nasties will find our corner of the borough.

  • Master Of Middagh

@David- Oh, I see what your problem was! And now I understand what you were trying to say. But I was by no means advising people not to go out at night- never did I mean to suggest such a thing. My position was that you should take precautions and be aware of your surroundings if you do go out. That’s not unreasonable or hypocritical, now is it? I’m sure you can understand why my tone becomes defensive and exasperated when I’m being accused of ascribing to beliefs I don’t hold.
