Montague Closed Between Henry and Hicks

National Grid is installing new gas pipes near the corner of Hicks and Montague streets, which has caused Montague to be closed between Henry and Hicks.

Update: The National Grid crew finished the job quickly, and the block is now re-opened to traffic (though the block of Montague between Clinton and Court will be closed from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. this evening; see below).

I miss The Brooklyn Union Gas Company and Montague Street was never the same when all of those well paid employees with long lunch hours left for MetroTech, and now MetroTech is near empty and they are in Hicksville.

Brooklyn lost alot with the LILCO/Brooklyn Union merger that created KEYSPAN and even more when the company was sold to National Grid in England.

The engineer for the Hotel Bossert was standing in front of the hotel, watching. The first thing he knew about it was when they painted excavation lines on the sidewalk in front of the hotel.

He told me that excavating the sidewalk would be a Big Mistake, because the basement for the hotel extends out under the sidewalk.

The excavators told me they found the old electrical lines for the streetcar tracks that were on Montague in the early years of the 20th century were still there, though no longer “live”. And that’s BH Archeological News for this week…
