Anyone in theHeights\/Dumbo Lose A Dog?
We were driving from Manhattan back into Brooklyn, over the Brooklyn Bridge, this afternoon when I spotted a very fearful dog hugging the rail adjacent to the outside lane. The dog was medium sized, had a red coat and resembled a Shiba Inu though he/she could have been a mix of some sort. The dog also had a collar with tag. Since there is always a police officer parked in his car on the ramp we slowed down and I yelled out to him (there were actually 4 officers present at the time) that there was a lost dog on the bridge.

I don’t know if they were able to catch him but if anyone lost a dog in the vicinity of the Brooklyn Bridge I would recommend contacting the the Police precinct closest to the Bridge (Manhattan side) or Animal Care & Control.

Did you have Boo Boo on a leash?

  • Miss Lucy

I am sorry to report that the lost dog, Boo Boo, was found- hit by a car on the BQE. Thank you to the caller who assisted in notifying the owner.
Thank you to all pet owners who helped look for her.

    Aw poor Boo Boo :(

  • Gerry

i am so sorry this is a sad tragedy the loss of a beloved family pet.

  • rachel

I am SO sad to hear about the loss. I met Boo Boo’s family this morning while they were posting signs on the promenade and I spent a while today trying to put the word out and track her down. Such a sad end to the story. My heart goes out to the family.

  • nabeguy

Having lost a family cat in front of my eyes to a tragedy similar to this one, I can only extend my sincerest condolences to the owner on their loss. As much as we think we know our pets, they are their own creatures with behaviors we’ll never truly understand.

  • ProtectDogs

Sad. My sympathies to BooBoo’s family

Whether this particular dog was leashed or not, I’ve been noticing many unleashed dogs on the Promenade lately. Dogs need to be leashed and protected against the dangers of the city with two exceptions:

    1) Fenced off-leashed dogs runs like at Hillside, Pier 6, or Dumbo Park
    2) Designated off-leash areas in parks like Cadman before 9am

There have been a series of these incidents. Busy streets and certainly the Promenade is no place for unprotected pets.

What is important is to find a solution or good method of prevention: In this regard, Locator/tracking transmitters are becoming far smaller, more effective and far more affordable.

I can direct anyone with a need to several firms I know (who
I have no connection with) which make very reliable products for this application.

I was so so sorry to hear about the loss of Boo Boo. The Friday night before I was caring for 3 dogs. I never take on that many dogs but 2 of them were of a friend who had to be in the hospital and I helped her out with her dogs as well. One of the dogs leashes oddly popped open . I must have accidentally put the leash down for a second on one of the other dogs and she took off like a wildfire . I spent the whole night looking, posting signs, calling vets, etc. Fortunately the dog was found. I had anticipated the worst. I was heartbroken for Boo Boo’s family when I read that she had been killed. I wish the family of Boo Boo could have been spared this tragedy. My deepest sympathies are extended and hopefully the beautiful memories of the dog will help. We live in a busy neighborhood here in the Heights with the BQE and other major streets nearby. We all must be conscious to make sure our dogs are never off the leash (even for a split second as in my case). Unless they are in a fenced in Park (as the comment that was made by Protect Dogs).

Received a call on my post-No, this is NOT RFID technology where
the animal has to go near a “reader” terminal to registed thier
    location.

This is more of a constant signal transmitter which allows the owner who also which is attached to a collar which in turn allows the owner who also has a highly directional small receiver
which indicates the location the signal is coming from rel. to the
owner’s position. Its more like a typical child finder system which
have found 100’s of lost or endangered children in the past
    decade.

The value of this system is that it provides fast highly accurate location of any animal it is attached to.

Heartbreaking, indeed. Great sympathy to the owner(s).

  • Anne King

People, people, please keep your dogs on a leash. I have two maltese and I wouldn’t dream of not leashing them. Every time I see a dog without a leash I wonder what would that person do if the dog ran off or into the street with traffic. My neighbor had a dog for 18 years and it happened to her. It’s such a tragedy and my heart goes out to anyone this happens to.

  • GHB

My condolences to Boo Boo’s people. I don’t know the circumstances of the situation, but as others have stated, it is imperative that dogs on the street remain on leash. I don’t care how “well trained” your dog is… all it takes is one scare to send them running. I’ve also seen several dogs on the Promenade and on our sidewalks without a leash lately. Please keep them safe!

  • rachel

It is also unfortunate that one of the gates at hillside has a broken lock. Any medium size dog could easily slip under the inner gate and walk straight out into incoming traffic until they fix that fence. Very upsetting considering how wonderful that park is, how necessary it is for our dogs to have that off leash time and the park’s close proximity to oncoming traffic. So sad about Boo Boo, it really breaks my heart.

  • Michelle S.

Very sad ending and my thoughts are with Boo Boo’s family.

@ ProtectDogs — Agreed leash is an absolute must to anyone considering otherwise.

@ Rachel — Also agreed re: comments about Hillside Dog Park. In addition sometimes visitors to the run aren’t conscientious about locking both inner and outer gates.

had a dog for 10 years plus, the day he died was one of the worst days, ever. just a dog, but it tears you up. my condolences.

I CANNOT THANK EVERYONE ENOUGH FOR ALL OF YOUR SYMPATHY. THIS HAS BEEN THE MOST HORRIFIC AND TRAGIC OF EVENTS FOR MYSELF, MY HUSBAND AND OUR 4 YEAR OLD. THIS DOG WAS THE ONE GREAT DOG YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE. WE ARE DEVASTATED.
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR OUTPOURING OF LOVE AND SUPPORT. IT HAS MEANT SO VERY MUCH TO US.

    @Rachel:

Thanks for the alert on the outside gate at Hillside. It’s actually not broken, per se, but when the weather goes from hot to cold, it tends to stick. That’s the most popular entrance and must get thousands of entrants each month. I just went over and gave the locking mechanism a blast of WD-40 and now it’s like buddah.

If/when that happens again, anyone can walk over and give the lock a quick spray of WD-40. Else, feel free to alert the broader Hillside community at the newsgroup on the Friends of Hillside Web site, or on our Facebook page.

    Thanks.

  • GHB

Thanks, Matthew… been using the lower entrance for weeks. I just thought it was broken.

  • xx

thanks Matthew. Same here, I thought it was broken the last time I was there (last week)

  • Lauren

    this is awful : (

  • north heights res

It IS awful, and it’s exactly why dogs should be on leases except when in enclosed areas – I got pilloried here for suggesting that dogs off-leash aren’t safe, and it would take little for a dog in Cadman Plaza – yes, yes, I know it’s permitted there – to run onto Cadman Plaza or up onto the BQE. Please, please take care of your animals and keep them on a leash or in an enclosed area. This is just a horrifying story. Poor dog, poor family.

My heart breaks for Boo Boo and her grieving family. As I mentioned above I had a very scary situation with a dog that ran away from me on Friday night (see above) and I searched for 10 hours before I found out that someone had found the dog. I was fortunate but anything could have happened. Luckily the person that found the dog brought it to Gothamist.com who photographed the dog and ran an article. One of the Vets that I contacted happened to be browsing the site.
Besides the “leash” issue I have a few things that I feel is important to share. I believe there should be a CENTRAL HOTLINE that goes out directly to all the blogs, poiice stations, animal hospitals, groomers, shelters, etc.in regard to a lost dog, child or anybody. While putting up pictures of the dogs (which I did) can be helpful — it would be great if you didn’t have to post site by site. I didn’t even know about Gothamist and probably wouldn’t have even looked. Especially when you are besides yourself with fear and grief there should be a central place to call that gets farmed out… Maybe there is I am not aware(i.e. Amber alert) If so can someone let me know what it is. I am very empathetic to Lisa and the family of Boo Boo because I had no idea that my little dog would return safe and sound thanks to the rescuer and Gothamist.com I am sure that if I had submitted a photo to the brooklynheightsblog they would have done the same but when you are running around scared out of your wits you do not know what steps to take.

  • GHB

Along the same lines, your dog should always be wearing his (or her) tags, and all dogs should be microchipped.

  • http://Building Jeffrey J Smith

Like every neighborhood problem, its my policy to try to offer a really effective solution or help in the questionable or threatening
    condition..

Note that Microchips ONLY work if the pet goes somewhere near a reader station and the inquiery signal elicits a response from the chip

As above, however there are several REALLY EFFECTIVE technologies which can quickly, and affordably locate a pet within like 10 blocks in an emergency loss situation when critical minutes
count with like 2 degree direction accuracy.

like every other questionable or threatening condition which effects the heights area, regret is understandable, but what
really ,matters is the establishment of structures or procedures
which prevent or greatly lessen the reoccurance of a seriously
negative event or condition (which at the same time does not
infringe or infringes to the least possible degree on our
    freedoms)

I can refer anyone with a need or interest to several highly responsible firms which produce very effective emergency
    locator devices.
