Mary Comes A-Callin’

The historic, retired harbor tanker Mary A. Whalen, which last September served as the “stage” for a production of the Puccini opera Tabarro, as reported here, has been moved from her berth at Red Hook to one between Piers 2 and 3, where she is clearly seen from the Promenade (see photo above). She belongs to a group called PortSide, and it’s not known to your correspondent yet why they’ve moved her. Could she be slated to become part of Brooklyn Bridge Park? Stay tuned.

Update: Props to alert readers Amy and Curious George for letting me know (see comments) that she’s here to host the graduation ceremony for the New York Harbor School, which will take place tomorrow. After that, she will return to Red Hook.

Update-update: Today’s Times has a slideshow and article about the New York Harbor School.

I believe that the New York Harbor School, an Urban Assembly high school currently based in Bushwick but moving to Governors Island, is having its graduation on board. In case the school’s name isn’t a give-away, the high school has a maritime focus.

    Sorry for being redunant … didn’t see Amy’s one-liner.

Thanks, Amy and CG. Last week a friend mentioned to me that a “historic ship” was being used for the graduation ceremony for a high school in Bushwick. I said I hadn’t heard about it, but this explains it.
