Crop to Cup Flies the Coop

Crop to Cup, which opened at 139 Atlantic Avenue in March, has vacated that space and moved to Gowanus. The hipster cafe never seemed to catch on with the Brooklyn Heights (or Cobble Hill) consumers. They hope that a larger venue will allow them to “hold demos, classes and coffee cuppings.” Their new location is expected to open at 13th Street and Third Avenue next month.

While BH certainly needs a coffee bar with the indie vibe that Crop to Cup tried fo, it also needs one that’s reliably open on evenings and weekends. CtoC always seems to have very limited hours.

Coffee tasted funny and the space was loaded with chunky furniture instead of seating. In my opinion, Brooklyn has a nearly unlimited capacity for homey, cutesy cafes like Iris, Ted & Honey or even the Tazzas. It’s difficult for a business to turn a profit selling just coffee, so the successful ones usually offer lots of food options.

I’ll miss crop to cup. My husband and I walked up there most weekends from DUMBO for coffee. And their pork sandwiches with those awesome pickled radishes were the best.
