What’s Up with Montague Street Bagels?

If you’ve visited Montague Street Bagels during peak hours on a Saturday or Sunday morning, then you’ve experienced the slow-moving line, the rapid-fire ordering process, and, finally, the tenuous five-to-ten-minute period during which you wonder whether the bagel you desire will actually be the one you receive. Also, you’ve become sort of intrigued by the honor system at the register. (“What kind of cream cheese did you order?” “Um, is plain the cheapest?”)

Let me just say that the bagels at Montague Street Bagels are delicious: chewy and crisp and soft in all the right places. The cream cheese variety is pleasing, as are the multitude non-cream cheese options and other foodstuffs opposite the counter. But this is New York City, and we take our bagels very seriously. We rely on our neighborhood bagel joints to provide a sense of comfort and routine almost as much as we do a satisfying meal. And when you’re pretty much the only bagel shop in a neighborhood, as Montague Street Bagels is, that is quite a burden to bear.

Joe Terranova, the new owner of Montague Street Bagels, understands this responsibility, and during a recent conversation, acknowledged that there are problems with his shop’s operations.

“If you look around, besides our bakers and our kitchen people, our front counter is totally new people,” he said in a phone interview yesterday. “It’s been a little bit of a challenge.”

Since taking the reins three months ago from previous owner Paul (“a good friend,” Terranova says), he has been working on creating a more efficient system because, in his words, “On Saturdays and Sundays especially, it’s a disaster.”

For the record, Terranova sounded as frustrated with the situation as I was, apologizing emphatically and not making any excuses. The constant mistakes and delays are, he thinks, the result of employees not taking their time. “We’re trying to have them slow down, write down orders,” he said, and promised that he’s going be more hands on behind the counter as well.

As he considers possible solutions to the problems, like moving the register to a different location or establishing a number system, Terranova wants you to know he feels your pain. “I see it everybody’s face,” he said, adding, “I’m aware of it, and I apologize.”

Also in the works for Montague Street Bagels: more additions to the recently established steam table; an expansion to the existing bagel menu; and personal 9-inch pizzas that will certainly satisfy the after-midnight crowd.

How would you improve the situation at Montague Street Bagels? Am I overreacting?

I’ve been going to La Bagel Delight since I moved to Brooklyn Heights in 1998. I’ve also tried Montague. La Bagel is by far the better choice – great staff, quick service, and delicious bagels and sandwiches. There is also one in DUMBO for those of us in the North Heights.

I was in the store today and while I was there, a Mom with her 10 year old kid changed her order twice in the space of 30 seconds, doing her best to drive the clerk nuts.

Of course, I was in there at 4pm, so the “I want it NOW” crowd was notable by its absence.

@jh – The whole wheat bagel I got at Heights the other day was the same quality it’s always been. Care to be more specific in your disappointments?

I did try out La Bagel in Dumbo, since I was wandering yesterday. Their whole wheat was crispy on the outside, dense, and slightly less sweet than Heights’–perfect, really.

If you go to LA bagles just make sure you sent a woman in. When a female friend gets my bagel I drown in cream cheese, if I get it I have to seriously search for the cream cheese which is basically why I stopped going there.

I HATE THE NEW OWNERS! This place was THE BEST! The old staff was awesome, they’d always remember you. If you got there early in the morning you could have your pick of every variety of bagel, still so hot from the oven that they didn’t even need to be toasted. I went there at 6:30am today, and all they had ready was plain, sesame, egg, and cinnamon raisin. I looked in the back and it didn’t even look like they’d started baking anything, all I saw were some sad looking donuts. I was shocked, I hadn’t been there for a few months and didn’t even know it had been sold. I am beyond heartbroken that Hot Bagels is gone forever. RIP Hot Bagels.

Well Like I mentioned before please keep the feedback comming, on the firing of all the old employees, there was only one that was let go, the others did not like supervision and the fact that this was not going to operate absentee like before. We are focused in producing good food and a friendly atmosphere and will continue to strive harder till we acomplish what we set out for and that is to be the best bagel/deil in all of Brooklyn Heights. May you all have a happy, safe and healthy holiday.

I have to say that I am delighted to shop at Montague hot bagels as often as I can, Everytime I stop it I am greeted by the bosses in a pleasent and friendly manner, the food is fantastic, no more Larsen & Hennings for my catering needs, I recently had Montague do a party for our office and my god the food was great, pleasure to have you in the neighborhood! :)

I actually find the staff less rude than they used to be. Actually it was just one skinny guy with glasses who would give me nasty looks when I ordered. Seriously, for no reason. That aside, its biggest flaw is the design of the shop. It needs some kind of Robert Moses makeover. Remember when you used to order up front then go to the back? Just as stupid as the current set up. You always feel on edge because everything is to the side…going in and waiting in that line going out.
-I do love their bacon egg and cheese and a good Paul Giamatti sighting, though.

Yes I have to agree that everytime I enter the shop I am always greeted in a pleasent manner, The steam table is pretty neat and the food is really good. The other day I tried for the first time a cinnamon toast bagel with walnut rasin cream cheese OMG I though I died and went to heaven! Keep up the good work guys, Montague Bagels rock!!

I agree with JR the owners suck and know idea how to treat the customers.Customer service sucks the owner is only interested in texting on his cell and flirting with anything that has two legs.
