Happy Days Diner – What’s Up?

IMG_2003.JPG

This from the BHB Inbox from "bhbabe":

Anyone else notice the paper covering the windows at Happy Days Diner yesterday?? place was being gutted this morning …. renovation or leaving town?????

Is Happy Days revamping? Does this mean a Quiznos or a Subway or a Sizzler? Who's got the dish?

Update: The BHB newsteam took a field trip to Montague Street and it looks like Happy Days is renovating!

mmm Quiznos. I’d take it over the current tenant.

We can only hope they’re closing. Could we maybe finally get a bar? Please no more food chains. What’s up with the paper up on the place down by Andy’s? That place closing too?

  • ABC

but it’s a mom and pop! can’t believe you don’t LOVE it!

Hope they’re renovating the gross food. It’s all about Grand Canyon across the street, folks.

Happy Days diner rocks the world!
Being able to enjoy a greasy cheeseburger, fries and egg cream while sitting in vinyl booth and resting your elbows on a sticky table 24/7 is an asset to any urban neighborhood.
I sure hope they aren’t leaving town.

If the food wasn’t inedible, Happy Days would be great. But even drunk, Happy Days falls short.

I thought it had something to do with the beef recall.

If true that they are rennovating…that is great…chef being fired would also be a treat. Seems like there are a few other locations for a bar to move in on Montague to serve the residents vs the lunch crowd losers. Also, what is up with that skin products place that is supposedly moving in on Montague…nothing seems to be happening after they covered the windows up…

  • GHB

I’m not a fan of chains, but anything would be better than Happy Days. The food sucks big time!

  • Curmudgeon

I’d like to see another Real Estate, bank or phone place. Montague Street just doesn’t have enough of them!

  • The Internets

I actually like Happy Days more than grand canyon. GC may have better quality, but as far as taste goes, HD beats it by far.

I was always *astounded* that such an *AWFUL* diner managed to survive…they *must* own the building, how else could they last among the skyrocketing rents? Their food is beyond icky, I wouldn’t give my dogs anything from there, and they eat garbage from the street! Blech.

Again…singing the high praises of Clark Street.

I have to say that the few times I went to Happy Days, the remainder of the day was anything but happy. If they’re in fact remodeling, I suggest they put the bathroom up at the front so you get a chance to use it on your way out. I swear that the grease they’re using is probably as old as the 50’s.

  • lifer

And there you have it, the reason why Montague has so little to offer foodwise, is that there are too many people who think food like Happy Days is good, the “bar” is too low to strive for greatness…or even goodness

  • HDEB

Happy Days serves its purpose as a greasy diner. By greasy diner standards it is good. Clearly if you are looking for fine dining this is not the place to go.
The atmosphere complimented the food. Perhaps I’m longing for an old fashioned soda shop or a pharmacy with a soda counter.
I stand by my opinion that Happy Days is a fun place to eat and that our neighborhood would be at a loss if they leave.

I’m done with montague street for eating except for 5 guys. The rest of the street is just so mediocre. The other good place- the green’s- for some reason turned into a very mediocre vietnamese place.

Henry street is really the only place for good food in the heights- ale house, henry’s end, noodle pudding, and siggy’s.

Happy Days is good if you have kids; they like that kind of environment and almost Macdonald’s food. It can’t be making money on the trade, so it really doesn’t matter what level of food it serves. The Black Market of whatever sort will continue to fund t he front…and the Card Reader’s up the block. Real high end businesses.

A new bar? Good idea but the same creeps from Armando’s for example would squat there…pondering their next innanity or maybe a change of libation after a day’s gin.

I would have to say that Waterfront Ale House is the best food in the heights. Far better then Henry St. Ale House. Don’t know how you left them off your list.

i always thought that this place was a front for something else….i mean, there is no other reason for a diner’s inability to cook something like scrambled eggs or grilled cheese properly….this place is disgusting

  • bh_dad

The pho at the new Vietnamese place is pretty good, haven’t tried the rest of the menu though. Agree that Waterfront Ale House has the best burger and bar food in the heights

Chris- I was just talking/thinking about montague and henry streets. Waterfront is some of the best bar food around and better than ale house. I don’t really think of it being in the heights, though it is.

also, when the DOH shuts down restaurants for violations, they often close down for “renovations” until the DOH lifts the shut-down order

  • JL

They scored a 22 on their last inspection in November. Not enough to close them down, but close (28 is the magic number)

Not wanting to venture too far, I went to Lantern on Montague this past Saturday during the windstorm. Not the best Asian Fusion restaurant, but the place far exceeded my expectations. The food was good and the interior design is among the best in the Heights. If I were them, I would expand the bar and run drink specials…restaurant biz 101.
