@Caitlin: I’ve always heard Middagh pronounced somewhere between “Mid-awe” and “Mid-ah”

  • Joe

Yes. Also having issues with posting here. I think it might be a mac issue but I like the old site a whole lot better. The current banner is blurry and not nice to look at and the whole design of blog is more crowded

I believe this has been discussed a few times on here, but was hoping for some clarity from people. I’m moving within Brooklyn Heights & TWC has become the bane of my existence: can’t transfer my service to my new apartment b/c even though the old tenant disconnected her service the system is showing it as both connected & disconnected and can’t suspend my service/stop billing me in between my moving and whenever they can transfer it to the new service. So basically they expect me to pay for service to my old apartment for fun because they have a computer problem.

Anyway, the point is I want to go to FIOS but unfortunately my new building is saying it’s unavailable. I remember discussions on here that some of the Heights is wired for FIOS but the buildings are not wired yet. My new building is on Pierrepont btwn Hicks & Henry. Does anyone know if that par of Pierrepont is wired for FIOS & I can put some pressure on my new building to allow it to be wired or am I stuck waiting for them to wire the streets first?

(Ironically my old building had FIOS & I didn’t take advantage of it then b/c I was too lazy to switch.)

…site hangs and Firefox crashes on my PCs, more a work than at home, but there, too….

    1. I am getting Fios installed on Saturday. I live on Columbia Place, so not that far from Pierrepont. I am looking forward to it. I’ll let you know how it goes.

    2. Have you guys tried the eggsalad sandwhich at Iris cafe? It has mustard aoili. yum.

    3. Did anyone witness the shooting on Sunday? What did you see?

  • GHB

If there’s a witness, they’re gonna tell YOU what they saw? STFU!

  • David G.

GHB, you are too funny. Also, you are a d-bag.

  • http://loureads.com Lou

Sorry but I really dislike the new BHB theme. It’s plain and gross. The lack of colored sidebars or center column makes all the content swim. Makes it look really messy to me. What was the benefit of switching themes? Monetization? The alternating color comment thing is lame, too. Thumbs down all around. Honestly, it’s so jarring I’ll be less likely to read it.

  • nabeguy

caitlin, it’s pronounced “gorgeous”. After 54 years on the block, I’m sticking with “mid-aag”

@lou feel free to offer design help

Superficial post, but: does anyone else think that CVS on Henry Street is the poorest run store in Brooklyn Heights?

  • caitlin

thanks everyone! i’ve been pronouncing it like “mid-dig,” but it seems i’m the only one. kind of funny that everyone says something different. i think i’m going to stick with, “gorgeous,” though. i like that one the best. :D

  • nabeguy

Run with it caitlin! Heights Guy, you’ve opened up a can a worms that I’m sure will be open an equally robust (and slimy) debate…personally, my nod goes to Gristedes, although, of late, they seem to have subjected their employees to some kind of “dealing with the public” regimen. The check out folks actually acknowledge your presence now!

  • Reggie

Come on, all the true residents here know it’s pronounced “My-daw-guh-hhh.”

If you can’t get FIOS in your building (which I can’t either), something to consider is going all 21st century by cancelling cable and getting Time Warner’s “Wideband” Internet. It’s blazing fast and there are plenty of ways these days to stream shows from the Web to your TV, hassle-free. If you combine that with Netflix and get a small indoor antenna to pick up on free, over-the-air HD broadcast channels, you end up with virtually everything you’d ever want watch, faster Internet than everybody else, save money overall, and get to pseudo-stick it to the man a teeny bit.

  • hickster

congratulations for keeping the rhetoric relatively mild today especially since there were a few topics that BHBers would normally sink their teeth into. muslims, middagh, mustard….

RE: CVS – I met the supervisor of the whole Northeast CVS and he said it was the poorest performing store in the whole NE. Love the new self-checkouts, but does the whole rearrangement really make any difference?

  • AAR

CVS – They seem to be trying harder. Recently, on two separate occasions, when I asked about an item the store employee was responsive and polite and took me to the area I needed to be. It would be so helpful if the store had a visible management presence.

  • harumph

CVS – while the rest of the store is generally pretty lame, the Rx department rocks. I’ve had nothing but great, out-of-the-ordinary service. They have double checked items for me, have called my insurance company with concerns or questions on costs occasionally and have made calls to my doctor’s office if they feel it is needed. Great service indeed. I would be heartbroken to lose that kind of care because the rest of the store needs more than self-service kiosks to make it work.

  • zorg

I can’t scroll down on any of these new BHblog pages until I force them to stop loading. (All interesting content is already visible, but ads are still being accessed.) I’m on a super-fast latest-model Mac PowerBook and I have a TimeWarner cable connection.

How do I get a gas oven repaired? My stove works, so I know the gas is connected and the digital display works so I know the electricity is connected, but the oven won’t light. Is that a job for a plumber? Or an appliance repairman? Any recommendation?

  • harumph

@Monty, we just called an appliance repairman when we had a similar problem – quick easy fix, but it did cost us $100

  • Monty

@harumph, who did you use? Got a phone #?

  • Heights Guy

Lori, thank you for your post. It makes me feel a bit better to know that CVS actually understands that there is a problem.

Unfortunately, the new self-checkouts seem to keep freezing, which no one working in the store cares much about, so now the line at the front is an even more tedious wait (while the three other employees stand around talking in the back).

I would take Gristedes’ air of apathy over CVS’s sullen incompetance any day of the week.

Sorry to sound like such a grump!!

    BEST FRIEND–MY CVS CHECKOUT MACHINE
Sad to say, but that’s the swing of much of today’s society. Sure, there are fewer real live cashiers behind those machines that at one time in history we called “cash registers.” But then, I was beginning to see that the personnel employed to ring up sales were becoming less and less interested, and soo few knew the American term, “thank you.” The checkout machine do have such a friendly automatic voice, handling us from the moment we put our chosen items on its stainless steel shelf. I even had one the other say remind me that I’d left my filled, paid-for shopping bag hanging there, all ready to be stolen by the individual in back of me.

I don’t suppose anyone has tried the food at CVS?

  • heightsss

    anyone find that cat?

  • redbaron

Anyone know what happened Tuesday on the corner of Pierrepont and Clinton (across from St. Ann’s) a little after 5:30pm? I saw an older man with blood on his face (from what appeared to be minor injuries) talking to a cop, and two women with strollers being interviewed by additional cops. I overheard one of them saying something about someone “running away down the street.”

  • Andrew Porter

I’m happy to report that the Sovereign Bank ATM machine has been returned to the CVS store, though it’s now on the south side of the entrance.

They’ve also completely redone the store, moved a lot of the aisles around, added some new products, but AFAIK, done away with the self-serve photo processing machines, and in fact I think all the photo stuff is now gone. There’s more food there, and I took advantage of the 2/$4 deal on the 12 oz. Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. There’s usually some really good food deal to entice you to buy stuff there.

  • harumph

@Monty – we used name/number from our super – I wish I still had it to give to you, sorry!

  • George Earl

The CVS on Henry Street has been magnificently redone. Its wider aisles are far easier to get around in than are those of most Heights competitors, and the store’s overseeing of its stock is to be commended. CVS offers a far wider choice of products and manufacturers, and its weekly specials are setting records for good deals. And its photo department is back in full swing, with employees there to perform top-notch. And yes, there are three self-operated photo machines with comfortable stools to sit upon while using them. Give it a visit!
