B’Stoners, come back and visit soon! It’s a grumpy old bunch, but deep down I have the feeling they love the excitement…

  • nabeguy

One last tidbit for the trolls. Truman Capote, having read “On The Road”, was quoted as saying “that’s not writing, it’s typing”. In your cases, it’s keystroking, with the emphasis on stroking.
    Sorry JL, couldn’t resist.

  • nabeguy

And exactly who has that been said by statestreet? That sounds more like a “stateofmindstreet” comment.

  • ilikebrooklyn

Did anyone observe the Art Institute filming of a shooting with a ‘full load’ in front of the Children’s Park on the Promenade? They just finished shooting (unintended pun). Loud gun shots. I would have thought this would have gone through the Neighborhood Association – perhaps it did.. however the film police didn’t think a school has to do that. They get a permit from the Mayor’s office (I was told). I don’t think anyone in the neighborhood knew about it from what it looked and sounded like. Bad policy… the school should have the students put a sign up informing so we know what to expect.

Last night for dinner I went to Pete’s Waterfront Alehouse and encountered a waiter so rude I thought it was another channel 7 setup. There were three of us and the bill came to $90. We left $107- an almost 19% tip. As we were leaving, we were approached by the waiter who asked, “did I do something to piss you off? You only left an 8% tip.” I don’t know if his math was off, if he was trying to shake us down for more money, or what. No one knew what to say to him because we had left a generous tip (despite his slow service) and we could not believe that someone in the “service” industry had the guts to be so rude to a customer. Even if we had left him 8%, he should have been gracious and thankful we left him anything! It’s a tip for good service, not an entitlement. Anyway, are there any other places around with good chili? I’m not going back there anymore.

  • epc

Was $90 pre or post-tax? He may be of the school that you’re supposed to tip on the entire balance including tax (which would be about $7.50-7.80, or $97 depending on whatever the current tax rate is).

  • David on Middagh

WillowtownCop, I had good chili at an informal place way down Smith St., forget the name, but that’s a bit out of the way. (These days I buy a couple of cans of Goya’s small pink beans and follow the recipe on the back, more or less.)

Any waiters or waitrixes out there: I double the tax for decent service, and go up from there. Please don’t be offended. As your managers do not include the tax as part of the menu price (which they certainly could do!), I don’t feel any obligation to include the tax — which they are collecting for the gubmint — as part of the tippable bill. If the tax were already included, I would probably be lazy enough to use the total bill as the tip base, though I make no promises as to the normal tip percentage.

By the way, New York City waiters & restaurant staff kick butt, and I keep that in mind.

So strange to see Brownstoners on here– like having guest characters from a cross show. I haven’t read brownstoner in a couple of years but I still recognize the names.

  • BrokeD

    Joe,

You mean like when like when Batman and Robin guest starred on Scooby Doo? That was awesome.

  • nabeguy

Fishburn, you’re trolling the wrong waters. Given the previous post on this open thread, I’ll fully admit to being thin-skinned…it certainly made for a rather painless tattoo. But humorless? If you can’t find the humor in my posts, you should check the batteries in your mirth-detector.

  • Jonas Von Groucheau

@Joe – of course you recognize their names. They’re the reason you stopped reading Brownstoner.

  • nabeguy

    Bingo, Jonas!

  • nabeguy

BTW, what the heck is up with those shoes?

  • haha

In 2 short sentences the whole Brownstoner crew just got pwned!, nice one Jonas.

  • Andrew Porter

Now I know why I never read the Open Thread on Brownstoner. Couple of hundred empty-headed comments that don’t say anything.

You people should check out YahooGroups, where you can start a group and have hundreds of comments a day, if you like. I dropped out of one group there that had, kid you not, a man and his wife on separate computers in different parts of their house, commenting back and forth at each other.

  • Beckett Lover

You readers would’ve enjoyed the Brownstoner comments way more if you had ever read (or remembered) “Waiting for Godot”. Not sure if it was intentional, and I think it was by their ready recognition of Pozzo/Rosencrantz/Guildenstern in the comments, but it was a great parody of the Godot dialogue.

And, I suspect, the BHB owner (John/Homer) was in on it because he could have stopped it at any time by blocking IP addresses of the commenters. To paraphrase, it was bloody brilliant.

  • haha

Beckett, uh, they attacked Melanie, and Brooklyn Heights dwellers in general, might wanna read back through those comments again

  • bhmom3

To Homer or whomever is in charge here: I really enjoyed reading the Open Thread every week until these people came on to have their “fun.” If this continues I guess I won’t be reading it any more.

  • shamrock

Mannn…., what an exceptionally grueling read, this open thread VIRTUALLY sucked the life right out of me. Time for the ole’ shamrock to have a diaper change!

  • Kim G

I agree with bhmom3 and shamrock ” exceptionally grueling read…sucked the life right out of me” and ” I really enjoyed reading the Open Thread every week until these people came over to have their fun”. Maybe I’m too dense to see the humor involved with these errant posts but I really didn’t get it…any of it. I continued to read hoping to find some normalcy. Also, I found the ” attacking” of some of our regulars unnecessary.

  • WillowtownCop

Free speech means political discourse, not yelling fire in a crowded theatre. Our trespassing Brownstoner friends were yelling fire on our blog and should not be permitted to do it again.

  • hoppy

This thread is like the “Human Centipede.” There’s a sick part of me that wants it to grow longer and longer…….

  • Andrew Porter

The Brownstoners who were banned used 200 posts there, moaning about being banned. You might also want to note they copies a lot of stuff from here and posted it there:

I’m having trouble accessing this site directly. Since last night, I receive the message,

    “This account has been suspended.
Either the domain has been overused, or the reseller ran out of resources.”

I can access bhb only via Google search. I have sent a message to the webmaster. Wondering if this is fallout from the brownstoner wilding.

  • JoJo

    Who are these crazy people?
    Give us our blog back!!!!!!!!!!!

  • David on Middagh

I can access the site directly, again. (Yay!) I cleared my Firefox cache, which was apparently hanging on to an outdated error page.

  • statestreet

I’m not sure I agree with all the criticism. I had to check out the Brownstoner OT and generally thought a pretty witty, fun and welcoming bunch. Perhaps here we are reinforcing the stereotype that BHeights neighborhood in genereal is stuffy and unwelcoming.
