Millman: Heights Grocery Options Stink!

Fairway.jpg

Regarding the addition of a Brooklyn Heights stop to the Fairway supermarket shuttle, State Assemblywoman Joan Millman tells the Brooklyn Eagle, “We do not have adequate grocery store options in the neighborhood, so it is my hope that the free shuttle to Fairway helps address this community’s needs."

The shuttle made its first stop in the nabe yesterday at the 55 Pierrepont senior center.

glad someone got back to you on the csa. yeah, the cobble hill csa is great too — and they have jim dines there selling his great meats and eggs (altho we had gorgeous eggs this year at sweatpea/brooklyn heights csa). and we have the farmer’s market here too.

I love fairway but it’s gotten a lot more expensive. Was remarkably cheaper those first couple of months.

    Fairway shuttle update.

Today I stopped by assemblywoman Millman’s office on Smith Street for more information. To call it a shuttle is a bit of a stretch. Apparently Fairway provides the vehicle and when Millman’s staffer has a list of 10 people or so lined up, arrangements for a vehicle are made. I was curious whether the shuttle was wheelchair accessible. Regrettably it is not.

If gristedes were to leave, (which I think will happen) would another store replace it? How would wholefoods fare? Perhaps the location is to small. Are there any independent grocers left in the city that could fill that space? What about a co-op? What are your thoughts?

I would love for a co-op to come in. We have considered joining the Park Slope food co-op but have hesitated because of the distance and our lack of a car. We tend to shop in multiple trips for a few things instead of one giant grocery shopping excursion.

If there is sufficient neighborhood interest I hope it can become a reality in the Heights.

RE: Trader Joe’s, I heard a rumor in the neighborhood that the Trader Joe’s deal fell through. Can anyone confirm/deny? I know they have construction permits up on the site on Atlantic/Court

just my two-cents on perhaps a too-lengthy blog, but seriously people, the meat is BROWN at key food. explain to me how they can sell this.

Key food is good for what it is. Could it be better yes but I ‘m glad they are there. I don’t buy seafood or meat there. I go to staubitz and fish tales instead. Its not a stop and shop but its clean for being in the city. If I wanted a stop and shop that badly I would live in suburbs.

I’d also like to point out that Mohammed the manager of the Montague Key Foods is the best dressed grocery store manager of all time. Seriously, in the summer of 2006 I went in and he was wearing an amazing purple snakeskin cowboy hat. Yesterday he was wearing an elaborate turquois necklace.
