Food blog Cherry Patter has some nice things to say about Iris Cafe, the hot new spot in Willowtown at 20 Columbia Place:

Cherry Patter: first off, the iris café cinnamon roll was really excellent. warm, soft (no raisins, a bonus for me), and just a touch of sweetness. i gobbled that thing down. we also had some eggs and soldiers (hard for that to be bad of course), and then a tasty new york cheddar and avocado sandwich. their stumptown coffee was pretty good too. if we lived closer, i would be here all the time with sandwich options like the roast beef with chimichurri, horseradish and tomato or the tuna with olive oil, hard egg and pickled green beans. iris cafe also has a rotating special of soups. ours that sunday was pozole pork hominy.

Iris is good food, but spendy. $13 for a $4 latte and a $9 sandwich, which was very well prepared, but small, is not good pricing. A treat only once in a while.

Is BH the only high end neighborhood in which, when a good restaurant finally opens, people still complain that it’s too pricey? Jeezus!

It looks like River Deli is just about to open.

I am happy that Iris Cafe opened because it is an exciting new addition to that part of the neighborhood. I can see myself wandering down there especially during pleasant weather. I also found it expensive for breakfast/brunch food. So given it’s remoteness and cost, I can’t see it becoming a part of my routine.

I love this place but they need some other drink options for non coffee drinkers. Kobacha tea is just nasty tasting. I wish they offered a decent iced tea or lemonade.

I think the place is really cute and a great way to spend a weekend morning. but it is a little too pricey, so i can’t imagine going there too often.
Also the place closes way too early, they should keep open later on the weekends, because i could definately imagine myself picking up some treats after work.

Iris cafe is seriously overrated. And their sanitation isn’t exactly top notch.

I find it’s a great addition to the neighborhood but agree about the hours. It would be nice to have a coffee place to go out to after dinner in the evenings. Especially in the summer when the park opens up, it could be a popular destination.

What’s a soldier, as in eggs and soldiers?

Maryellen — “Soldiers” are sticklike slices of toast. Gotta love the Brits.
