The middle column can be an “all posts” column aka what is currently what you see on the homepage of the current bhb and the old chb.

on cobble hill blog i’ve arranged the “news” section in sorta that fashion — http://cobblehillblog.com/archives/category/news

actually — changed it to a new category “blog posts” which includes all 2010 posts and future posts from all categories

I think the layout could work, but needs more styling. You can either go traditional and just sharpen up the fonts and boxes (see http://www.portfolio.com) or go more modern with brighter colors and maybe rounded edges to look trendy (see http://www.parents.com/).

I don’t like it. I liked the former chronological format, the same as here. When I went on, I couldn’t find a previous post I’d commented on, to see if anyone else had commented.

But what do I know, I only published magazines (one, a news magazine) for several decades and also worked in advertising and magazine production.

Bhb if the readers had their way would stay in the stone age.

I don’t care for it. It is too crowded and cluttered. The layout makes it hard to find what you are looking for and it is not easy to locate previous posts. I think it is too much like a “news” site as opposed to a blog.
