Picking up on a suggestion by loyal BHB reader and commenter Nabeguy, in an attempt to get away from kvetching about what’s actually coming, what are your wishes for five establishments you’d like to see go into vacant spots on Montague?

I basically want Montague Street supplanted with every establishment on Bleecker Street between 6th Ave and 7th Ave South. I noticed that there are several requests for a bagel place. I no longer eat bagels, but is the Montague Hot Bagels store really that bad now?

    Hoppy: yes.

    1) an annex of Alma’s restaurant
    2) a mom-and-pop style bakery
    3) a good housewares store (not a Lechters!)
    4) a laundromat/coffee bar combo–socialize while washing your undies…
    5) a cell phone store….just kidding!!!

Not a bad thread, huh Homer? Hoppy and all, I don’t think I ran across a a call for a Mamoun-like falafel store. And based on a very cursory sampling, it seems that a fish store and a Mexican restaurant are at the top of the list. Sounds like a ceviche bar would be a killer. HF, I think you should collect the top choices and submit them to the BID and BHA.

I’d like a place, any place, where you can walk in with a stroller and sit down without hostile vibes. It would have to be a bigger place, and shitty food is fine. And I’d be happy to leave my stroller outside if there was space. Panera? Anything like that. Obvious upside: strollers could go there and leave the rest of the shops to the kid-haters.

(And I’ll give Tutt Cafe their second shout out of the day — they are super nice to kids)

I think every second floor shop along Montague should be a cafe. By law. And open til midnight.

Evelyn, I love the mash-up idea of a laundromat/coffee bar. You could extend it to include a bookstore. Given the rents on Montague, diversification may be the only answer. If one doesn’t work, the other one might. Hmmmm, serious thought here. Any investors out there? Throw in muffins, this could be a mint.

    1. Le Pain Quotidien — answers the need for a bakery, a sandwich shop, a place for kids — and it’s organic/environmentally friendly. This would be my number one choice!
    2. Decent Vietnamese or Thai.
    3. A fish store. (Or a butcher that’s open past 6:00.)
    4. I’ll take a decent French bistro type of place.
    5. Shake Shack in Brooklyn Bridge Park

    2. A live music venue that features jazz and/or singer-songwriters
    3. A bookstore like Book Court
    4. A fun, relaxed restaurant that serves Mexican or BBQ
    5. A CB2 or Crate and Barrel (my one concession to chains)

    I vote for:
    1. Mexican Restaurant,

    4. Any bookstore
    5. A plant store!

Yes, bornhere, I remember the antique store on Henry, that later became Sinclair’s. I think I still have something from that store.

  • Andrew Porter

Bring back Pic-a-Deli! (For myself, and for The Mook.)

And the Entenman’s Outlet Store, now that I’m dreaming.

But none of this is likely to happen, unless a mad millionaire subsidizes the Heights.
