Nabe blogger Vittles Vamp has a first look at Ozu  at 78 Clark Street, opening soon in the old Sea Asian location.

Vittles Vamp: This is the owners’ first foray into the city (or at least into Kings County), with two Sumou Sushi outposts already firmly planted in suburban Long Island. But, this new Japanese-fusion spot promises to take the swank up a notch from its “Giland” brethren in both kitchen and front of house.

“I have a hard time believing that the Hasidim in Williamsburg or the Italians in Staten Island think of their residences as anything other than “housing developments”.” But black people in Brownsville do? I obviously can’t speak for everyone, but I, and I believe most of the people I work with just think of the projects as where we work. We have eleven people- three of them are white. One cop (white) lived in the projects when he was a kid, and one (hispanic) still lives in the projects, and a third (black)’s wife grew up in the projects, and her family still lives there. I can’t say I’ve never heard the phrase “these people” used before (not by me) by both black cops and white cops, but they use it just as much about the (mostly white) yuppies in Cobble Hill. I guess I was just irritated because I feel like “cop” = “jackbooted racist government thug” to some people, and I felt like I was being unfairly accused.

What does this have to do with sushi? How about discussing tapeworms and other raw fish danger?

This is the best thread ever! I love my neighbors!

For the record, I was seeing an Asian woman last year, she made and laughed at “R” jokes….

  • ls

    I’m asian. It’s offensive. Let’s drop it.

  • ratNYC

    (yawn!) this is soo boring…

  • FYI

Arch, you’ve proven my point. What you wrote is a perfect example of the racism I mentioned above. Namely, “this Asian friend was okay with it, therefore, no other Asians/any other race can find it offensive.” Why not? Because they all think alike? I saw a white guy make a joke about a car once. Does that mean all white people looove car jokes? You are ridiculous, and so is your faulty logic. Comments like this on the site, again, just make Bk Heights residents look bad, and fosters suspicion in the community. You never know which racist from the Bk Heights Blog comments board will be behind you on line at the bagel shop or Noodle Pudding.

Now, to stay on topic, why can’t we have a better range of restaurants around here that actually stay in business for longer periods? I vote for a few Cobble Hill restaurateurs to open up satellite locations on our side of Atlantic.

Can we get back to the true point of this thread: Great Wall.

  • nabeguy

willow, I sincerely apologize for making a statement that you interpreted in that way. You’re certainly no thug. You’re out there and I’m not, so I had no right to make arm-chair assumptions about the work that you do. Personally, I’ve always taken pride in living in a city that has the best police force in the country.
As for Great Wall, try the steamed dumplings with the soy-ginger sauce.

  • WillowtownCop

Nabe guy- apology accepted. Now I’m going to say something truly offensive- I think the best Chinese restaurant around is not in the Heights- it’s the Red Apple on Columbia and Hicks. I have not found a Japanese place anywhere in Brooklyn that is my favorite yet, so I’m going to give this place a try.

  • hicks st guy

hey rocck, are you serious about Great Wall? place is cheap, decent, I guess I don’t get it.

  • nabeguy

And here I thought Red Apple was a supermarket. Where’s Columbia and Hicks? And how are their dumplings?

  • WillowtownCop

Columbia and Union. It was too early in the morning.

  • nabeguy

Thanks for the clarification. I thought my mental GPS was on the blink.
