Thankfully Hair Profiles has not closed — just moved to Remsen where the Yoga place was, across from St. Francis. The owners of the building are putting a laundromat in that space, to replace the one that burnt down.

Sorry, I’m getting a bit confused….where is the new laundromat going to be? As I recall, the New China Teacup was on an upstairs floor, which strikes me as an odd place to put a laundromat.

    A few queries and comments:
    1. I heard from one of the Housing Works volunteers athat the are in need of…more volunteers. (Maybe also good for the just-retired person.)

    2. I know that someone hear nominated Bobby Cruz from the UPS Store for the BHB Ten. I have not had the pleasure of meeting Bobby. but I did recently have the displeasure of dealing with their staff over the holidays. I was expecting a somewhat oversized USPS package and was worried that if Kenny (our super-great local package guy) was off for the holidays I would never my daughter’s presents from the UK. So I was having the box sent to the UPS store. I called for several days in a row pre-Christmas, it turned out to have been shipped late, and arrival was expected c. 01/02/10. So… I didn’t call for a few days. When I called on 1/2, it turns our it arrived on 12/31 — and they didn’t call me “because we were busy.” Isn’t UPS supposed to be busy over the holidays? I thought that a phone call was part of the $5 fee!

Last summer they left 2 boxes of plants for nearly a week before I called them to check. Anyone else with similar experiences?

Not the SAME experience, bklyn, but, sometime ago I DID make a consciousness-shift that I suggest you might profit by doing, too.

To wit: it dawned on me–duh!– that service people who are supposed to do something for one seldom do, if ever, on their own. They just don’t–it’s a (sad) fact of life.

So I’ve made myself responsible for making sure that guy X is called regularly to ensure his arrival to fix something, or that woman Y is equally bugged to be sure she calls Z, or that…etc., etc.

It’s a drag, but for me at least, better than the disappointment/anxiety that invariably occurs when others are left alone to fulfill their responsibilities/promises, which, as well meaning as they may be, they don’t.

In other words, the best offense is a good anticipatory defense.

Thansk, AEB — that actually is my general mindset, unless I find a notable exception to the rule. But, you see, I did call them on a daily basis, for nearly a week — and then when I stopped because I thnoght the box wouldn’t come until after the New Year — they didn’t call me when it did arrive, after all my due diligence. So it was like an extra slappy slap in the face (although not on the back of the head at Starbucks.) Thanks for the advice.

Not as bad as my friends experience with a language-challenged employee at the post office who, on 12/22, miss-heard a request for 2nd day delivery as 7-day delivery. Needless to say, 14 days later, the package still hadn’t arrived.
My general experience with “service” people falls into the proverbial two-speed mode…slow and reverse. But when you find a good one…bliss worthy of a letter to corporate headquarters.

bklyn20: If you have the tracking # you can setup your own email alerts on ups.com for the status on the package. Fedex has the same service.

Yes, nabeguy, I was told that a laundromat would replace Hair Profiles upstairs, to be used by consumers and the employees of the dry cleaners below for wash-n-fold.

(Public SERVICE announcement, and to show I’m made of the very finest stuff: I see nothing lowly in being a “service person.” I’m one myself, at my job–and though I would be the last human to claim that the world spins on the axis of my endeavors…well, you get the point.)
