There’s a wonderful resource available at the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, and it might appeal to readers of this blog. The BPL lends (on premises) excellent equipment to convert any VHS tapes one might have to “digital media.” (Almost all will bring a flash- or USB drive and give old “home movies” a life likely beyond our own.) It’s a time-consuming process, but “the holidays” coming up are an especially good excuse for considering this exercise. The BPL website allows you to make an appointment, and there’s no do-it-at-home option that isn’t either complex or expensive or both.

A requested article/posting: It would be great if one of the “regulars” or someone new could “review” the current exhibit at the old “Hist. Soc.” at Clinton & Pierrepont, perhaps focusing on the Brooklyn Hts. component.

More generally, how CAN one submit material for publication here? Is it best to clear something in advance?

Did anyone else notice how seemingly all of North-South Brooklyn Heights was gridlocked all day yesterday?

Clinton Street from Cadman Plaza all the way down to Atlantic. Bumper to bumper.

    Henry and Hicks, completely full.

Even Cadman Plaza itself was bumper to bumper and crawling to the south.

Anyone know what was going on? I’m assuming the weekend work on the BQE left it in a transitional state that had ripple effects.

Ah, Claude, your photo of the wonderful Behr Mansion tops today’s post. One of my favorite buildings here in BH. There’s a lot of info and more photos on this Wikipedia page about it:

Meanwhile, here’s Remsen and Court Streets, showing the Terminal Building, in 1918. The building on the left is still there, though the pillars in front were later removed. The building on the right is now gone. Photo by the Wurts Bros.:

Adams, like all Republicans, looks to the private sector both for bribes and “solutions” to intractable problems.

He should get bidding going on a car ferry from S.I. and/or Bay Ridge to downtown Manhattan. It might be possible to do it without any subsidies. Wouldn’t a boat-full feel that $50 [rush hour rate] was better than 2-3 hours of stop-and-go?

Wishing cars away will never work – this would. Only the sky has less traffic than NYC’s harbor & rivers, and improving our terrestrial infrastructure at $multi-billions per mile simply doesn’t compute!

Anyone know the deal with the three gray helicopters circling the neighborhood?

  • Sick Orski

Lots of Blackhawk helicopters flying around this afternoon. I noticed the same thing after the Ukraine invasion.

Yes, I was wondering about those. A city council member tweets that they were NYPD-related but not much more than that: https://twitter.com/CMJenGutierrez/status/1714709211379069354

hagen-daz? anyone know what’s happening in that space?

  • Banet

It looks like a spruce-up. There’s a branded banner saying they’ll be back “soon” and a handwritten sign saying it will be 2 weeks.

Why spend the money and lose the revenue? No clue. The interior was… fine and you’d think they’d do it in January when sales are lower.

I was walking on Cadman/Court, Henry and Hicks several times around lunchtime and early afternoon on Tuesday, and didn’t notice anything unusual. Crossed Clinton once and looked normal, too.
DOT says the BQE work ended sooner than planned – Sunday afternoon instead of early Monday morning.

Yes, a workman there told me it was only repairs.

“Fortis, SUNY at each other’s throats over troubled Cobble Hill project”
This city & state are so broken and corrupt. We lost a hospital and gained a big hole in the ground. And some genius designed an ER where the ambulance entrance at Atlantic/Hicks is smack on top of one of the most traffic-clogged intersections in the borough. (Only to get worse for years when BQE work starts.) Nice job, folks.

agree. this has been so mismanaged and makes the congestion on hicks and around the BQE/Atlantic awful.

LICH had NOT been used by residents of Brooklyn Heights.

Brooklyn Heights women had their babies at North Shore Hospital, Northwell in Manhasset, or NYU Medical Center or other Manhattan hospitals.

It appears that LICH and other Brooklyn healthcare facilities have a stigma otherwise a negative reputation.

  • Effective Presenter

Does anyone know what happened to the HUGE Othmer Grant given to LICH well over $100 million dollars earmarked for healthcare in Brooklyn?

  • Banet

They’re hustling to get this done as fast as they can. They were working in there tonight – Sunday – at 8pm.

  • Banet

They walked away with it and spent it all on other SUNY hospitals. A total scandal that no one paid attention to.

My daughter was born at LICH. Early in the morning of November 4, 1993 my wife awakened me. “I’m having contractions.” I said, “I’ll call a car service.” She said, “No, I want to walk.” She called her OB/GYN, who was credentialed at LICH. We walked from Montague across Hicks to LICH. Her doctor asked, “How often are you having contractions?” She said, “Once every block.” He said, “Long east-west or short north south?” She said, “The short ones.” He said, “Stay.” It was a difficult delivery, ended by a c-section at about 11:00 pm. The doctor and nurses were all superb.

  • NeighboorHood

What a wonderful story! I never understood the contrarians who tossed that”no one in the neighborhood uses LICH” argument. There must be something about elective care vs EMERGENCY hospital care needs that they can’t grasp. If you’re dying from an asthma attack, heart attack, accident, etc. it’s not to much for tax paying citizens to expect something less than a 30-45 minute trek to a “nearby” hospital! And a belated congratulations btw 😂

  • Cranberry Beret

LOL, speak for yourself – my Brooklyn Heights babies were born at LICH

  • Effective Presenter

Sister Soulja sued LIICH and won Soulja thought the place was a dump.

  • Effective Presenter

    That means Continum Health Partners?

  • Effective Presenter

That had been a LONG time ago.

I was born in 1959 our children born in the early 1990s.

We are glad that you’re wife had a good experience at LICH.

Others had NOT including Sista Soulja who had sued LICH because the nurses, etc profiled her as another African American single mother. Soulja explained that LICH was a dump full of racist employees.

  • Mimi

My husband and I were both at the ER and got great attention.
My sister was also treated at that hospital.
